AUGUST 2022

FROM THE COCKPIT

As the month turns to August, it is a great reminder of a few of my all-time favorite events this month. First, the USO NW Staff and Volunteers will be pier side this week, welcoming both US and Canadian Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guard into Seattle for Seafair 2022. We will have lots of food and drink, and USO Volunteer smiles on the pier, especially as we look skyward and watch the Blue Angels fly overhead. Come by and say hello if you are on Pier 90 for a ship tour.

Additionally, the USO Northwest Portland Golf Tournament will take place at Langdon Farms on August 18. If anyone would like to rally a team and support our military in Aurora, Oregon (just south of Portland), please contact me this week or next, and we will add you to the golf festivities. FORE!!

As I mentioned last month, we have seen increased requests from our military for USO support.  With opportunities like this comes the chance for you to volunteer directly at a USO Northwest event that directly supports those serving in the Armed Forces. These direct interactions are why so many of you (over 350) are USO Volunteers already. Please contact me or any of our center managers to inquire about volunteering. More information about the USO Northwest can be found on our website -  https://northwest.uso.org. A simple visit to any USO Northwest Center to see what our volunteers do is emotionally rewarding and good for our souls, and if you ask, the appropriate Center Manager will provide you guidance on how to get involved!

Later this fall, our Five Star Gala and Auction is set for October 15 at the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington. Not only will we be honoring the six local Military Members of the Year, but this year’s Guest Speaker will be Medal of Honor Recipient Master Sergeant Earl D. Plumlee. Please see the following link if you want to reserve a table or individual seats at this heartwarming and life-changing event. https://usogala.maxgiving.bid/tickets

Finally, we could not do all we do without support from the community, so a “special thank you” to each of you.

Cheers,

Don Leingang

SEATAC CENTER
Service members and family coming through the SeaTac Center were given gift bags provided by USO Northwest and AT&T during a recent layover at the center.
Volunteers at the SeaTac Center passed out special Seattle Mariners hats to military members coming through the center.
The SeaTac Airport Center saw about 35 people come through on July 4th, where the staff and volunteers provided lunch and festive decorations!

CAMP LEWIS CENTER
Cris Henry, the owner of Bryan's Automotive in Lacey, WA, taught a Car Care Clinic to the Coffee Connections spouses that gathered at the USO Camp Lewis Center in mid-July.
Volunteer chefs Junko and Mary served Church's Fried Chicken to more than 200 hungry soldiers, airmen, and their families at our Camp Lewis No Dough Dinner for the month of July!!
Camp Lewis volunteers served a picnic lunch to soldiers qualifying at the JBLM rifle ranges.
Volunteers Mary and Junko served up hot wings to hungry soldiers during a recent Wings Wednesday event at the Camp Lewis USO Center.

USO TRANSITIONS

The USO Pathfinder Transitions Program supports military spouses and service members at every stage of their military career. From taking your oath, to well into your journey to civilian life. Let’s face it; military families are constantly in transition. Moving, being between PCS’s, leaving friends and family, prepping to move, deployments, training, remote tours, TDY’s, new additions to the family, graduates heading to college, and everything in between! Having support is a beautiful thing. That’s what the USO is all about!

USO Transitions provides professional development services. Your USO Transition Specialist connects you to the resources you need, no matter where you call home. Core areas of support: employment, education, financial readiness, VA benefits, and mentoring. USO Transitions is a focused, tailored experience. Our objective is to provide you with a detailed action plan for the resources you need to obtain your personal and professional goals. Everything we do is free of charge!

Our program is a fantastic fit for spouses who focus on their families and those transitioning out of the military, preparing to pivot and join the civilian workforce. The USO Transitions Program is not just for active duty Service Members. In fact, one in five JBLM Action Plans created were actually to assist a military spouse. Schedule time on your calendar to dedicate to your future success and register at www.uso.org/transition.
