SPOTLIGHT ON PARTNERS

MULTIFAITH HOUSING INITIATIVE

When one person or one family has a safe, adequate, and affordable place to call home, their lives are changed. But when entire communities and cities like Ottawa provide housing and basic social services to the poor, the country is positively changed.

Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI) exists for one purpose, and it’s as simple as our name: we want all people to have safe, continuous affordable housing, and when they do, our job will be done. We want housing to be affordable in Ottawa — for everyone.

The current story in Ottawa is that thousands of individuals and families are without permanent homes or adequate temporary living facilities. How do we #MakeADifference? We’re looking beyond city shelters, and into the future. We’re talking to people to find out how they live and what they need to feel healthy, safe, empowered, and successful. We’re designing solutions based on long-term needs — and long lives. We don’t want to be around forever, but we want affordable housing to be.

MHI operates five housing sites in Ottawa: the Haven, Somerset Gardens, Blake House, and Kent House and Veterans' House. MHI was able to purchase all our sites using a combination of donations, personal loans, government grants and conventional mortgages.

Since June, 2021 iSisters has been pleased to offer programs to learners at Multifaith Housing who have graduated Basic and ICT programs. The women attending our computer skills sessions have interest in enrolling in our Career Connections program to gain basic skills and knowledge to prepare for a successful job interview, employment search, online application completion and more.

CANADIAN WOMEN’S FOUNDATION SUPPORTS OUR CAREER CONNECTIONS PROGRAM AT THREE PARTNER LOCATIONS

We are thrilled to announce that we are expanding our popular Career Connections Program, through the generosity of a grant offered from the Canadian Women’s Foundation at Immigrant Women Services Ottawa, Tungasuvvingat Inuit Centre Ontario and Youville Centre. Graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce, pursue further education, create experience opportunities such as volunteerism, or consider an entrepreneurial option. Our programs are offered at no cost to women in need supported by grants, our donors and our iSisters Team. Thank you Canadian Women’s Foundation for making a difference in the lives of women.

iSISTERS IS PRODUCING A NEW VIDEO

Cicada Creative has been contracted to produce a video with our learners to showcase iSisters and how our programs have been a benefit to them. Also included in the video are guest appearances by our community partners and our Executive Director, Ann McSweeney. Thanks to all for participating in this project. We can’t wait to introduce you to the final result at our AGM in October.

OUR SINCERE CONDOLENCES

On behalf of our entire iSisters Team our thoughts and prayers are extended to our past Board Chair, Pat den Boer and her family on the recent loss of her dear Mother. May you rest in peace.
