SPOTLIGHT ON PARTNERS
MULTIFAITH HOUSING INITIATIVE
When one person or one family has a safe, adequate, and affordable place to call home, their lives are changed. But when entire communities and cities like Ottawa provide housing and basic social services to the poor, the country is positively changed.
Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI) exists for one purpose, and it’s as simple as our name: we want all people to have safe, continuous affordable housing, and when they do, our job will be done. We want housing to be affordable in Ottawa — for everyone.
The current story in Ottawa is that thousands of individuals and families are without permanent homes or adequate temporary living facilities. How do we #MakeADifference? We’re looking beyond city shelters, and into the future. We’re talking to people to find out how they live and what they need to feel healthy, safe, empowered, and successful. We’re designing solutions based on long-term needs — and long lives. We don’t want to be around forever, but we want affordable housing to be.
MHI operates five housing sites in Ottawa: the Haven, Somerset Gardens, Blake House, and Kent House and Veterans' House. MHI was able to purchase all our sites using a combination of donations, personal loans, government grants and conventional mortgages.
Since June, 2021 iSisters has been pleased to offer programs to learners at Multifaith Housing who have graduated Basic and ICT programs. The women attending our computer skills sessions have interest in enrolling in our Career Connections program to gain basic skills and knowledge to prepare for a successful job interview, employment search, online application completion and more.
