Welcome New & Returning Sprint Team Paddlers
- July 25th -

Summer is in full swing at the Calgary Canoe Club.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to have you join the team. Please read through all the information in this email.

You may occasionally receive emails from coaches in regards to activities/events. Follow day-to-day training on our Youth Sprint Team Instagram page and our Official CCC Instagram Page. Parents, you can also check back on our Flickr page for photo highlights.

We are a competitive Racing Team. When appropriate, we encourage all athletes to advocate for their needs and communicate directly with their coaches. We are lucky to have an extensive coaching team, and each athlete will work with several coaches.

First Day Procedures

On August 8th, The Calgary Canoe Club (CCC) will welcome new and returning athletes for the start of summer programs. Coaches will greet athletes in the field next to the clubhouse. Tables and signs will indicate where they will sign in and where they will gather. A coach will escort them to the first-day meeting zone and give instructions.

Athletes who bike to practice can leave their bikes on the bike racks by the club.

*DO NOT PARK on road between the Parking Lot A and Canoe Club Parking lot

If not able to attend the first day

If your paddler is unable to attend any day(s) we kindly request that you email the coaches at: sprint@calgarycanoeclub.com and let them know. We will do our best to review what they missed so they are caught up and ready to get back out on the water having fun with their group.

If your paddler only has to miss a morning or afternoon please do your drop-off or pick-up between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm (lunch break). We will not bring one paddler in early (unless this is an emergency). This ensures that the entire group can continue with planned activities on the water together with the required number of coaches.

Weather Cancellations

In the event that weather forces paddlers and coaches off the water, we have plans in place. In the case of extreme cold, electrical storms, or high winds that will persist for the majority of the day, we will cancel activities at the Club and paddlers will not attend. Where possible, make-up days will be available to paddlers and we will contact parents to reschedule them to alternate days through the summer. We strive to communicate weather cancellations within 24 hours via email and post announcements on the Calgary Canoe Club website at www.calgarycanoeclub.com

If it appears that it is only going to be a morning or afternoon of bad weather, we will plan to only cancel that period of time and have paddlers arrive in the morning at the normal drop-off time and be picked up at 12pm or arrive at 12pm and be picked up at normal pickup time. For short term poor weather issues, we will look after the paddler and make room inside the tents and/or building and get creative with more games and activities.

We do not offer makeup days for paddlers that choose to miss a day of camp. We understand paddlers may have other appointments or want a day off, just let us know.

Lunch procedures

Athletes are active all day and should ensure they bring a healthy lunch and snacks. Refrigeration is not offered for lunch storage, plan lunches accordingly. All age groups have a supervised lunch hour and coaches take attendance before lunch and after. Garbage, recycling, and compost bins will be available for paddlers. We strongly believe in the leave no trace philosophy so will always ensure that all trash is picked up before leaving the lunch location.

With consistent practice, athletes should be able to:

  • Safely group up on-water at a meeting point

  • Self-rescue from the shoreline

  • Learn how to self-manage a simple to moderate training workout

  • Use a personal digital watch to run time

  • Engage in 'team' communication on water, through wash-ride practices and leapfrogging games

  • Feel confident in the foundations of paddling technique

...To thrive at the Canoe Club, athletes should bring:
  • If your paddler has a PFD that fits them they are welcome to bring them, however, this is not required and the Canoe Club will have PFDs in many sizes.

  • A water bottle, running shoes and flip-flops (dock shoes)

  • Appropriate clothing for the weather (if cool - cozy clothes and 1 set of other paddling clothes)

  • Sunscreen and bug spray

  • A lunch, snacks

  • Water-resistant digital watch for use in training activities is beneficial

  • It is best if athletes have a single training bag to hold all their belongings.

Note: It is best to avoid bringing expensive items to the Canoe Club. We do not have secured storage space for bags. Storage space is provided on the deck under tents.

Due to the need to be on schedule, late arrivals and mid-practice departures may not be possible as groups are training and coaches cannot leave the group to drop off or pick up athletes. Please do your best to arrive on time. If your athlete has an appointment in the AM, please have them come for the 12:30 PM start; if they have a PM appointment, please pick your athlete up by 12:30 PM.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We aim to respond to emails within 24 hours. Parents should alert the coaches if they're not attending a particular day or session. Email to sprint@calgarycanoeclub.com.

Thanks for your attention, and we can't wait to welcome you to our team!

Wishing you a great summer of Canoe Club life,
Your team at the Calgary Canoe Club
