Storm recovery programs for families

Emergencies by their very nature are disruptive and can be very stressful. The recovery process can take time, sometimes months and even years.

After an unexpected weather event, such as the 2021 June storm, children, teenagers and adults can all be affected.

While parents have a vital role in influencing how their children make sense of and respond to any potentially traumatic event, we know that parenting isn’t easy at the best of times, and if you find yourself in a position of parenting in the midst and after a storm or unexpected disaster, your task is even harder.

Parents as much as children need support, which is why Council is running a number of programs to support young people and families in their recovery.

Below is a number of programs targeted at supporting and helping families through their recovery.

Emotion focused parenting

We're supporting a free emotion focused parenting program for parents who have concerns around how they or their children are coping following the challenges of extreme weather, pandemic and whatever else life has thrown at them.

Over six sessions facilitators will work with parents and carers to identify what topics they want to focus on and then work with the group to provide ideas and strategies for:

  • Better understanding and talking with their children
  • Helping children manage their emotions and deal with conflict
  • Managing challenging behaviours
  • Parenting anxious children

‍This program is coordinated by Yarra Ranges Council Community Recovery team, facilitated by Julia Russell from Anglicare Parentzone, and supported by Mums of the Hills

When:
All six sessions must be attended and these are held every Thursday between 11 August and 15 September from 9.30am - 12pm.
Where:
All sessions will be held at Montrose Town Centre, 935 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, Montrose.

This series of four free online workshops focuses on building those skills to strengthen relationships between couples and family members.

The online webinars are held every Wednesday between 24 August and 14 September from 7:00-8:30pm.
