Aug 4 2022 – Google DeepMind, and the heart of AI in Alberta
Google DeepMind’s Edmonton Office - celebrating 5 years
Thursday, July 28 was another lovely summer day in Alberta - as the tech community celebrated the joyous 5th Anniversary of the Google DeepMind Alberta offices. Within the recently renovated facility in the newly-named AMII tower, many tech champions gathered, including familiar faces from Edmonton, Calgary, and beyond.
I knew that this was going to be a memorable event – but not for the reason I thought. Yes the offices were cool. And of course the speeches from the founding members and AI/ML icons - Dr. Rich Sutton, Dr. Michael Bowling, Dr. Patrick Pilarski – were invigorating. But what I found the most inspiring, were the facility tours.
The tours were extraordinary – as they were hosted by the AI/ML researchers themselves! We were brought from station to station, where at each post we were greeted by a researcher, who was even more enthusiastic than the last. As we were treated to an overview of the subject area, and demo - I found myself fascinated even more on how Rich and team were able to work this magic, in transforming typically introverted individuals into an engaging group of Alberta-loving, tech-sector-building ambassadors. So I had to ask my tour guide – how does this happen? And the answer cited at every station was – “It is about leadership. The entire leadership team are role models of respect and team empowerment. They said that volunteers were needed, and everyone stepped-up - even more than there was room for. And anyone who is not here, wishes that they could be.”
Oh yes – and by the way, the message that had been given earlier, by Rich, Michael, and Patrick in their speeches – was that the strength of the DeepMind Alberta office, was in the Team and Community.
So there you have it - the team stating it is all about leadership, and leadership stating it is all about the team and community – you can tell that there is a lot of love and support here.
So yes, it was a great day – and a very sincere pleasure, to experience the Heart of AI in Alberta,
Thank you all!
