AAMRI announces new CEO Dr Saraid Billiards

We are pleased to welcome Dr Saraid Billiards as AAMRI's new Chief Executive Officer. A highly regarded leader, policy maker and researcher, Dr Billiards brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to AAMRI. Read more on our website.
 

VicAAMRI sees promise in new Victorian Health and Medical Research Strategy

The Victorian branch of AAMRI welcomes the Victorian Government’s new Victorian Health and Medical Research Strategy: 2022-2032, which will support the state’s medical research workforce to deliver more life changing and lifesaving innovations. The Hon Jaala Pulford MP launched the strategy on 25 July, and outlined the four focus areas: talent, collaboration, big ideas and generating outcomes.
 

AAMRI Convention 29 & 30 November 2022

We are pleased to confirm that the AAMRI Convention and Dinner will take place on 29 & 30 November 2022. The AAMRI Convention will feature two full days of sessions focussing on the most pressing policy and operational issues facing the medical research institute sector. The venue for the AAMRI Convention will be QT Hotel, Canberra. More details to be sent through shortly. 

2.  Government update

 

Independent review into the ARC

The Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP, announced an independent review of the role and function of the Australian Research Council (ARC), with a particular focus on the governance framework and reporting mechanisms.
 

Consultations 

 

National guideline for supporting the learning, participation, and wellbeing of autistic children and their families in Australia

The national practice guideline is seeking NHMRC approval and is open for public consultation. Public consultation comments should be directed to the guideline developer on the AustismCRC website. Closes 29 Aug 2022.

3.  Sector news

 

CSIRO opens National Vaccine Therapeutics Lab

The new $23.1 million national lab in Melbourne will bolster the nation’s ability to produce vaccines and drug treatments onshore. The facility was completed with funding from the Federal and Victorian Governments. 
 

ARC Research Hub launched to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

The Research Hub will receive $4.9 million in ARC funding over a 5-year period under the latest round of the Industrial Transformational Research Program (ITRP), with an additional $6.9 million in cash and in-kind contributions from participating organisations. 

 

Victorian mRNA Innovation Hub launched

The Hub is a partnership between the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, the University of Melbourne and Monash University. The Labor Government is investing $5.4 million through the mRNA Victoria Activation Program (mAP) towards the $9.1 million project which will support a total of 27 Victorian researchers.
 

Seer Medical establishes Global HQ in Melbourne with investment from Breakthrough Victoria

Breakthrough Victoria will invest in Seer Medical, Australia’s largest provider of epilepsy diagnostic services, to support the company’s expansion in overseas markets. 
 

Australian Cancer Plan engagement hub

Cancer Australia has launched a new Australian Cancer Plan engagement hub – an interactive website to stay up to date with the development of the first Australian Cancer Plan.
 

ACT new health research and innovation strategic plan

The plan "Better together: A strategic plan for research in the ACT health system 2022-2030" sets out the Government’s vision for research to be driven by their health workforce to improve the health and wellbeing of their community.

4. NHMRC update

 

NHMRC consultation: reaching gender equity in the Investigator Grant scheme

If you have been unable to attend one of the online forums around Australia to have your say, then the Survey on Options to Reach Gender Equity in the Investigator Grant Scheme is still open, and will close 3pm AEST 16 Aug 2022.
 

The NHMRC 2021 report card on funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research

NHMRC’s annual report card on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research funding in 2021 shows that 206 active grants were funded with more than $58 million – 7.09 percent of the Medical Research Endowment Account.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday 29 Aug 2022 - more details on the call for abstracts on the NHMRC website.

Medical Research Future Fund Consumer Reference Panel

The Consumer Reference Panel advises the CEO of the Health and Medical Research Office on strategies for strengthening consumer involvement in the MRFF. The Panel's details are on the MRFF website, as well as interviews from panel members about their consumer priorities for the MRFF.

There are four $50k grants on offer for use of specimens from the VC2, with preference given to EMCR applicants. Closes 09 Sept 2022.

AIHW releases 2022 report card on the health of Australians

The report shows that Australia is generally a healthy nation compared with similar countries. However, the report highlights key health challenges facing Australia, including the prolonged impact of COVID, the health of First Nations peoples, mental health and chronic disease.

KCA Annual Conference, Commercialisation 4.0 - 1-2 Sept 2022, VIC

The conference will feature workshops and sessions with leading industry speakers exploring Commercialisation 4.0 themes. There will also be a pre-conference workshop taking place on Wednesday 31st August titled 'Valuing IP' which may of on Interest.
