SSCNA WEBINAR WITH LIFESAVING SA ON DROWNING PREVENTION

On Thursday 28th July 2022 Lifesaving SA hosted a Supervision Saves Lives webinar in conjunction with the Sport for Social Change Network Africa to discuss the World Drowning Prevention Day, Drowning in South Africa and Mitigation of these events going forward.

In 2019 the World Health Organization (WHO) reported approximately 236 000 people drown globally each year with most drownings taking place in low and middle-income countries, particularly those with access to aquatic resources, oceans, dams, and rivers.

South African mortality statistics estimate approximately 1500 people die from drowning annually in South Africa, an average of 4 people daily. Two-thirds (66%) of all drownings in South Africa are under the age of 30 years with males being more than twice at risk than females. In South Africa almost 500 deaths or one third of the reported deaths occur under the age of 10 years. In the age group 5 to 12 years the WHO estimates that drowning is the sixth highest cause of unnatural deaths globally. These statistics however do not account for those who have drowned due to floods or violence. A leading cause of the deaths by drowning is the lack of proper supervision of children and toddlers around water.

Speakers:
Dr Sam Ramsamy – IOC honorary member since 1995
Dr Colleen Saunders – UCT and Chair of the LSA Research Committee Ms Kristen Bent – Operations Manager – N1 City & Western Cape HEMS Netcare911
Host: Mr Mzi Mayedwa – LSA Director of Drowning Prevention

ALTUS SPORT OLYMPIC EVENT

This past July, SSCN had an Olympic themed event with our members, Altus Sport. The day celebrated the spirit of the Olympics and focused on the joy, passion, determination, challenges and discipline that come along with sport, all while practicing fair play, respect for others, pursuit of excellence and balance through the body and mind.

The Olympic event took place at Anchor Comprehensive High School, Orlando, Soweto. Some activities of the day included; researching and learning about other cultures & countries and bringing togetherness through sport.

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.

3. FEATURED MEMBER

Special Olympics South Africa

Founded in 1991, Special Olympics South Africa (SOSA) is home to more than 45 000 talented athletes trained in 18 competitive sports. The NPO provides year-round training for men, women and children with intellectual disabilities. Their goal is to transform their lives through the joy of sport, and to transform the lives of their families and communities.

The NPO is thrilled to announce that SOSA has been invited to be apart of and to nominate an athlete to become an ambassador for the 2022 SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge. This challenge takes the form of a walk or run dedicated to the struggles women face and overcome. The Virtual Challenge encourages all participants to harness their power, adopt the #IRise philosophy and become part of a collaborative community that collectively rises above their challenges. The official SPAR virtual challenge will take place on the 3rd September 2022, and SPAR’S goal is to have over 60 000 people from all over South Africa, walking or running on this day.

Ms. Christinah Maloka, former learner of Tshegofatsong Special School in Mamelodi, is this year’s ambassador for the challenge. Christinah is an exceptional young woman, who chose to rise above her challenges, insecurities and fears by not allowing her disability to define her. Instead, she broke free of those shackles turning her challenges into opportunities. Maloka will be joined by: Mrs Elana Afrika – Bredenkamp, - SA popular radio broadcaster, television presenter, actress, Ms Thandy Matlaila - SA TV personality and Actress, Ms Donnalee Roberts - SA actress, model, filmmaker and screenwriter - Ms. Jeanie Steyn SA Netball player and Mimi Mahlasela SA actress and model, to mention a few.

SOSA are thrilled for their athlete to take part and represent this incredible challenge, set to not only educate, but also to empower and encourage the youth of South Africa with a disability.
