Thomas Lancaster: Artificial intelligence and academic integrity

9th September 2022

Webinar synopsis:

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday life for many, so much so that many current students will find themselves relying on artificial intelligence tools when they progress into employment. The educational community has not yet fully embraced the opportunities offered through artificial intelligence or considered the possible ways in which these technologies could be misused by students, allowing them to breach academic integrity standards.
In this webinar Dr Thomas Lancaster will discuss artificial intelligence technologies available for students now and how these can be used to provide them with unauthorised assistance for written and creative assignments. He will demonstrate written and graphical outputs from current tools that students can access and consider how the educational community should adapt its processes in the light of artificial intelligence.

About the lecturer:

Dr Thomas Lancaster is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Computing at Imperial College London, UK, with responsibility for student support. He has been researching academic integrity related topics since 2000. Thomas is best known for research into contract cheating, a threat to academic integrity he first discussed in 2006. He now sees a similar threat posed by artificial intelligence and encourages the sector to consider early interventions to address this threat. Thomas works with sector bodies on academic integrity and regularly delivers keynote addresses and provides training on associated issues.
You can find out more about Thomas at his web or follow him on Twitter.

19th October 2022: Global Ethics Day & International Day of Action Against Contract Cheating

The Global Ethics Day and the International Day of Action Against Contract Cheating 2022 is on Wednesday 19th October 2022.
This year, ENAI doesn't have any specific event planned for this day, instead we have organised a whole-year-long activity - the monthly webinars.
ICAI has provided a list of ideas on activities, a list of recommended teaching resources, and has organized a student TikTok contest

Is your institution planning some activities? Are you organizing workshops or an informative campaign? Please, share your plans with others for inspiration! ENAI members and supporters can dive into a discussion in ENAI Discord (please, contact ENAI office at info@academicintegrity.eu if you don't have access).
Are you organizing an event going beyond your institution and would you like to invite international participants? Please, let us know and we will inform ENAI newsletter readers about your event in the October newsletter, scheduled for early October.
You can also share your activities with ICAI through their online form and you can use hashtags #excelwithintegrity #myownwork when sharing your activities on social networks.

The International Center for Academic Integrity's Student Participation Working Group, would like to find students with a commitment to academic integrity to help to generate ideas for the 2022 International Day of Action (IDoA) against Contract Cheating, which will be on Wednesday 19 October 2022.

In the name of ICAI we would like to ask that you reach out to any students you know of who may be interested and seek permission to share their contact details with us. The students will be invited to join an advisory group to brainstorm ideas for the IDoA against Contract Cheating. Contract Cheating Checklist for Markers

By Olu Popoola and Lorna Waddington

Contract cheating detection just got a little bit easier! Dr Lorna Waddington (Leeds University, UK), award by the 2022 ENAI Outstanding Activism Award, and Olumide (Olu) Popoola (Queen Mary University of London) an education developer and forensic linguist, have been workshopping the Contract Cheating Checklist for Markers.

The checklist was created by a contract cheating working group established by Olu as part of a regional UK academic integrity network. This checklist was created following a literature review and reflective analysis by academic integrity specialists from 6 different UK universities. With 40 contract cheating indicators across 8 categories it is one of the most comprehensive checklists created to date.

Lorna and Olu recently conducted a workshop for the Centre for Academic Integrity in the UAE, led by Dr Zeenath Khan, who despite being an expert herself in this area, still felt a workshop could be useful. Read Zeenath’s interview below to see why! Dr Waddington is keen to use these workshops as an extension of her activism (thank you Lorna!). If you are interested in booking a workshop for your institution or joining the working group (we are planning more checklists) visit the website where you can find contact and booking details.

Interview with Dr Zeenath Khan:

Why did you feel you needed a contract cheating detection workshop?
Given the growing trends globally, particularly as we return to a new normal after the pandemic and remote learning, we at the Centre for Academic Integrity in the UAE felt we needed to raise awareness about contract cheating and to help faculty understand and recognise flags in assessments. This also follows in the heel of the recent study done by Khan (2021) on counting the number of unique and original websites that are actively targeting students in the UAE.

Who was the target audience of the workshop? Why these people?
As the Centre aims to support the entire academic community in the country, we reached out to partner universities and schools who then nominated their academic integrity leads, officers, teachers to join in so they could go back and cascade the knowledge in their respective campuses.

You were happy with the workshop😊 What was most useful about it?
Yes, the workshop was a great experience for all of us who attended. The insightful examples and exercises that showed the types of issues when detecting possible cases of contract cheating, particularly when trying to differentiate between commercial and student work, were most helpful.

What was the impact of the workshop on the people you invited? Were there any significant comments?
We have had considerable positive feedback from all those who attended the workshops. In fact, everyone who provided us with feedback rated the workshops on the highest point on the scale.

Given that you are an expert in this area already, what are your views on this kind of workshop? Any suggestions for improvement?
I truly believe all academic institutions need to have this workshop run at their institutions, perhaps as 90-120 minute sessions in order to help faculty truly understand and recognise flags that can help detect contract cheating in assessments.
We will approach you with the regular newsletter in two months. If you want to share with us, and with other recipients, any interesting news from your country or some curiosities from the area of academic integrity, we will welcome your contributions. Please send them to info@academicintegrity.eu.
Feel free to share the newsletter with your friends and colleagues, or send them this subscription link, the newsletter is open to everyone!

Sincerely yours
