A word from our Director
The August newsletter is full of opportunities and celebrations! In this issue, we celebrate grants/awards winners and share growth opportunities in the areas of scholarship and education. We close with a discussion about leadership skills and a reminder to be present. Take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and the rest will take care of itself! - Dr. Abby Spencer, MD
Spotlight of the month: Jennifer Duncan, MD,
Assoc. Professor of Pediatrics,
Director of Wellness for GME

Loves: My new golden retriever puppy, Scout, who is now 12 weeks old.
Family: My wonderful husband Troy and I met our sophomore year in college, a long time ago. We have three kids - our daughter Alex will be a senior at Vanderbilt and is planning to apply the MSTP programs, our daughter Anna will be a sophomore at MIT and will build something amazing and impactful someday, and our son Will will be a junior in high school with college planning looming ahead.
Area of education you are in: Mostly graduate medical education. I am now the Director of Wellness for the Graduate Medical Education and interact with residents and fellows across all Departments. I am a former program director for the pediatric critical care fellowship and remain involved in fellowship program education both at the division level and Department level. I also co-direct the new SAFE program which includes learners from all areas of the medical center.
What you love most about teaching/educating or mentoring: I love helping trainees think about career development. It is fun to see them think through what they enjoy most and what matters to them. Asking them questions and giving them time to reflect has been powerful. I love seeing trainees get excited about something they have learned or want to learn. Seeing trainees succeed in an area that has been challenging for them and then launch into the next phase of their career is incredibly rewarding.
Drives/inspires you: Making a difference - whether that is in the lives of the patients and parents that I care for in the ICU or in the impact I have as a mentor for trainees. Knowing that the words I say and the time I take to engage in the conversations inspires me to keep going.
A career accomplishment(s) that you are most proud of: I have done a lot of program and curriculum building over my nearly 20 year career at WashU, but perhaps the most meaningful thing that I reflect on is being nominated by my fellows in my final year as PD for the Distinguished Educator Award. Even though I wasn't selected as the final recipient, the nomination was amazing feedback to me that I had made a difference for my fellows, who really mattered to me.
Fun fact: I am a good slalom water skier and windsurfer AND I have a plethora of cucumbers and Patty Pam squash in my current vegetable garden if anyone wants some!

Teaching Pearl

"Make the most of each day,
and the future will take care of itself."

The meaning, of course, is that our energy is much better spent in working and doing than in worrying. The late Paul Beeson once said that to me, and it has been a useful guide for me ever since.
