Children's Summer Program

On the 1st through 3d Sunday each month, children of grade-school age have their own program, with games, crafts and perhaps some surprises.  Usually, the children join their families for about the first 20 minutes of meeting, and then leave for their program with their adult leaders. They will be returned to their parents at the rise of meeting.

Junior Meeting - On the 4th Sunday each month, there's a treasured opportunity for children in grades 1- 5 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends.  Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Puppets!

Heather Carter is teaching Puppetry for 6-12 year olds, Aug 8-19 (two weeks, M-F). From 9-4 every day we will work alternately collaboratively and independently to work on dexterity and problem solving; our artistic feedback process; and relational skills while making at least six (and maybe more!) different puppet types. We also play a lot of games every day; we will have two days with visiting mural artists; and are creating our first ever Friday Field Day. Camp is hosted at Brentwood Art Exchange in Hyattsville, MD. (Before 9 a.m. care is available, same location.) $260 residents/ $338 non-residents, as set by MNCPPC.

Please call, text, or email Heather Carter (via Breeze) with questions about the class or if you'd like to register the young artist in your life.

Heart communication happens when we slow down, when we quiet down, look, and listen. Stop to take a breath. Become fully present with the person we’re with. Listen with all of our being. At this point, communication can occur without words. Being present is a gift that fills our hearts and spirits. We are in communion.

Watch the Recording of the

Webinar on the War in Ukraine

The Baltimore Yearly Meeting Peace Committee offered this webinar last month.  Friends can watch the recording of the event at this link You will need an Access Passcode: DBn?K8Z. Now here's what we've figured out about that passcode - the reason it hasn't been working for many of us. See that [.] at the end of the passcode? That's part of the code. If you include the period in the code, it works.

Reel and Meal Film  on Surviving Hiroshima

August 15 at 6:30 p.m.

The August Reel and Meal film about Setsuko Thurlow, a Hiroshima survivor, and her efforts to move the world back from the brink, remind us of why we must abolish nuclear weapons. The risk of nuclear war during the Ukraine conflict is higher than it was even during the Cuban Missile Crisis, according to many foreign policy experts.

The film will be screened both in-person at the New Deal Café, 113 Centerway, Greenbelt, MD and online via Zoom; registration required at  https://tinyurl.com/ReelnMealAug15.

Trans People Should "Step Back" for the Campaigns?

[From the editor:  Although this Washington Post article is set in the context of partisan politics, it is a story about respect and inclusion.  I read through the article thinking about Bayard Rustin being asked to step back from the public eye during the march on Washington (which he had organized), because he was openly gay.]

On Native American Issues

Portia Skenandore-Wheelock, manager of FCNL's program on Native American Issues sent us an update on July news.  She explains two court cases on criminal justice jurisdiction and urges action in support of the bill to set up a commission to investigate the impact of the boarding schools mandated for Indigenous children.

In other news, NORTH PACIFIC Yearly Meeting has just approved a minute asking all of its monthly meetings to commit to a list of steps toward right relations with Native peoples.  The list is instructive for those of us wondering what to do, how to begin.  Worth a look.

Action for Lower Rx Prices for Seniors

Couch Potato activists are being alerted to a call for action on Medicare and prescription prices.  AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is asking for calls to Senators to approve a bill that allows Medicare to negotiate for lower prices for its patients.  The bill is in the Senate, near its last hurdle. The hope is to get Senate approval before Congress adjourns for the August recess.

The AARP asks supporters to call Congress at 844-981-1116. Here's a link for more information on the bill.
