You can do some simple things now to help lock down your website; Newspack team expands again

In this edition:

  • Take steps to improve site security
  • Newspack team expands again
  • Recent site launches
  • Get our meetings on your calendar

It's never the wrong time to check on or improve the security practices on your site

While the Newspack platform and WordPress software are inherently secure, it is also the responsibility of editors and publishers to ensure good security practices in their daily use of the site.

A loose end was recently tied up on one publisher's sites, which let some malware slip through. Although we quickly identified the problem and fixed it, using the tips detailed in this document will help you rest easier.

They include using:

  • a strong password
  • a password manager
  • two-factor authentication
  • caution in assigning administrator responsibilities
  • only approved plugins

Our own Ken Gagne led a recent How To session on security, which you can see here.

Newspack continues to expand to serve you better

Our newest launch engineer is Abdelmalek El Mallouki, a software developer based in Rabat, Morocco.

He's passionate about programming and how impactful it can be, and he loves turning 3 a.m. ideas into real products. When not coding, he's probably learning new languages (infatuated by Go at the moment) and technologies, playing the guitar, or tinkering with his 3D printer.

As a launch engineer, he's working alongside the Newspack team and

our publishers to help them get going as quickly as possible, hassle-free.

Megan Jonas joins the Newspack team as a technical account manager from her home base in Fort Collins, Colo.

Prior to joining the team, she spent 10 years building and maintaining WordPress websites for a wide range of businesses and non-profits.

Earlier in her career, she worked at C-SPAN in Washington for six years, including two years on the web desk and three years producing the three networks’ White House coverage.

Megan holds a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, focusing on Interactive Publishing, and a dual

bachelor’s degree in television, radio and film from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and political science from the Maxwell School of Public Policy.

Margaret Schneider has joined the Newspack team as head of training and documentation.

Margaret has worked in or adjacent to newsrooms her entire career, serving as a managing editor in city and regional publications, editing books and alt-weeklies, and launching several startup publications.

In her last role, as director of editorial projects at Alley, she created and managed the agency's WordPress CMS training program and trained hundreds of folks on editorial teams. Margaret brings her experience working with large, high-volume publishers such as New York Post and NBCUniversal/Telemundo stations, as well as many smaller publishers (including a few newsrooms that have since joined Newspack!).

She is passionate about making the lives of writers and editors better, and as part of that mission, she's shared knowledge in sessions at

events including the Online News Association conference, News Product Alliance Summit, SRCCON, the Investigative Reporters & Editors conference, WordCamp for Publishers meetups, and ONA Local meetups.

We're looking forward to all the ways we can work together to iterate and build on our documentation and training resources for publishers!

177th Newspack newsroom launched
  • Berkeleyside | The leading local news source for breaking news, public safety, politics, food, real estate and development, education and more in Berkeley, California.
  • Verite | A nonprofit news organization with a mission to produce in-depth journalism that serves the people of New Orleans.

Congratulations to newsroom leaders on your launches in the recent weeks.

Get our regularly scheduled meetings on your calendar with a couple of clicks

We have a meeting every other Tuesday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. This is for publishers and developers to get together, but it is by no means mandatory. Most of the meeting is turned over to guest speakers for professional development, or to one of our team members to highlight a major change to the Newspack platform. We use this meeting to update you on business and product developments, as well.

And here’s a handy way to get them all on your calendar:

We also hold a 30-minute How To session each Friday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. We offer a quick look at one topic, block, feature or other useful maneuver. You can see how these work by going here for or small-but-growing library of videos. The password is ilovenews
