Your Monthly Marketing Motivation

August 2022 | Issue 33

Happy Monday morning to you! I hope you feel refreshed and ready to tackle the week. And if you are still feeling burntout from last week, hopefully, you'll get some inspiration from this quick digest of the why, what, when, who, and how for marketers who want to accelerate their personal and professional growth.

Don't let failure, or a marketing campaign that didn't perform quite as you expected, get you down. Instead, reframe and then revamp your idea.

I know we live with impossible expectations in marketing. (Can this go viral, anyone?)

But are those real? Did your CEO tell you, "it better result in this, or else!"? Or is it pressure you put on yourself to "make it happen" in marketing?

The reality is that our marketing efforts are based on our hard-earned experience, input from our marketing plan, and a dash of SWAG (a scientifically wild-ass guess). 🤪 But we can't make people do what we want. Gee, if only that magic was possible. Sometimes great creative doesn't inspire. Sometimes our call to action isn't as urgent as we think it is. Sometimes our audience is just plain distracted.

So, here's a reframe for failure.

Failure can lead to growth.
It builds endurance.
It's a learning opportunity.
It will push you to be more imaginative.

When you confront failure, remember:

It took James Dyson 5,126 vacuum design attempts before he could get a properly working vacuum.

Henry Ford's first company, the Detroit Automobile Company, went bankrupt. Only then did he found Ford Motor Company.

Studios rejected George Lucas's Star Wars twice before 20th Century Fox agreed to take a "risk" on it.

You can also see some examples from Sweden's Museum of Failure here.

If you reposition marketing as experiments, you'll see failure as an opportunity for new implementation. Then you can tackle the revamping and try again. I will try to do that more often, too.

Now that's some #marketing #motivation.

What I've been reading
  • I'm all for productivity hacks, but the truth is, we can only push our thinking minds so far. (We all feel this on those burnout days.) However, there are three very doable suggestions for freeing up some space inside your noggin.
  • Notebook humor. This pretty much summarizes my thinking every time.
  • A colleague shared this poem with me last month, and it speaks directly to YOU if you're confronting failure.
  • Don't wait and always be looking!
  • Mission statements exist for organizations, but did you know you should have one for your marketing? This focuses on content but reminds me of all the steps you should take to create a marketing plan!
When I've felt inspired
  • I love to share my marketing knowledge with industry professionals. That's why I created my High-Five Nonprofit Marketing Video series and host the Two Marketing Moms podcast. In addition, I've spoken and presented at various events, and I'd love to talk to YOUR audience. You can learn more about my speaking engagements here. (It includes a video I recently produced, which I think is quite spiffy.)
  • Do you happen to follow me on social media? I'm on LinkedIn and Instagram. In August, I'm dropping some special content about budget season and marketing planning which I hope will help get you amped for 2023. Plus, a reminder that you can get a FREE one-page marketing planner here
