Center of Excellence for Global Food Security and Defense at UMES
Since its creation in 2020, the Center of Excellence for Global Food Security and Defense has forged concerted efforts to address food security and defense challenges encountered in four target sub-regional clusters including West/Central Africa, East/Southern Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America.

In addition to supplying the U.S. with a globally educated workforce, the center’s areas of work include agricultural development, agricultural disaster recovery, animal and plant pests and diseases, and global food security and defense.

The center's partners include the nineteen 1890 land-grant universities, the 1890 Universities Foundation and many international public and private sector partners who will soon be meeting September 12-14 for the Global Food Security Summit in Atlanta.

Small Farm Conference planning is underway!

   SAVE THE DATE | November 4-5, 2022

The goal of UMES Extension's Small Farm Conference is to equip farmers and landowners in Maryland and along the Delmarva Peninsula with tools and strategies to increase farm profitability and promote farm sustainability. At the same time, the event is a tool to revise and expand program and outreach activities to address individual as well as community needs, emerging problems and concerns of target groups, including limited-resource, new and beginning, and underserved farmers.

Visit the Small Farm Conf. site HERE! Registration opens Sept. 1
Click the top image or HERE for a video from 47 ABC's visit to the second annual UMES Ag Showcase. Representatives from the event's partners, pictured above, are: (Top) Dr. Jurgen Schwarz, chair of UMES' Department of Agriculture, Food and Resources Sciences; (Above left) Adam Smith, crop advisor with Simplot Grower Solutions; and (Above right) Aaron Boggs, precision agriculture manager with Atlantic Tractor.

Top right: Mitch Bigelow of Innvictis Seed Solutions talks about corn varieties in the field trials.
Above left: Jim Vizzard, owner of Mid-Atlantic Seeds, talks about the 8108 variety.

The second annual Ag Showcase was a success, with over 100 participants coming out to the UMES Research, Extension and Teaching Farm on Stewart Neck Road, just south of the UMES campus.

It was a great day for agricultural partners UMES Extension, Simplot Grower Solutions and Atlantic Tractor LLC to come together to bring research to farmers and stakeholders to help them increase yields and profit margins.  A recurring comment throughout the event was, “We’re all in one family,” everyone working together with the goal of helping farmers find what works best for their operations.

This year’s event focused on corn variety trials, agronomy and the latest in equipment and agricultural practices.  Great care was taken when designing the experiments and laying out the field trials.  Collaborative work began months before the event.

Thanks to our partners Simplot and Atlantic Tractor and our sponsors Mountaire Farms, Mid-Atlantic Seeds, BigYield.us and AgroLiquid for making the event possible.  We also extend a shout-out to our vendors and exhibitors.

If you couldn't make it this year, make a plan to join us at next year’s Ag Showcase!
