Dear Church Family,

For over 20 years, FBC had been a Charlottesville location for Upward Basketball. Between the challenges of Covid and a lack of volunteers, Upward has not returned to FBC since the 2020 season. I believe Upward is a tremendous outreach tool to our community. Since arriving at FBC over six years ago, I have been impressed by the difference that this ministry makes in the lives of young athletes and their parents.

Indeed, we’ve already had calls at the office asking if Upward was coming back! While at my dentist just a few months ago, my dentist shared that her kids loved participating in Upward basketball and hoped it would be coming back at some point. She recognized me from the times I refereed Upward games. Yes, that is right, your Senior Pastor referees basketball games. Why? Because I believe in the ministry of Upward basketball to reach families and kids for Jesus!

Our plan this year is to rebuild Upward Basketball by starting small, and by focusing on the basics of the gospel and the basics of basketball. We need a significant number of volunteers to make this ministry happen. The schedule for Upward is typical: evaluations in October, practices in December, and games in January and February. If you are looking for a place to get plugged in, this is a great opportunity. This is an opportunity that will make a lasting impact. Also, the great thing about Upward is that we provide all the training you need!

So, what now? I want to invite you to an Upward Basketball informational meeting on Sunday, August 28th at 5 PM in the Fellowship Hall. At that meeting, I’ll share with you a vision for the ministry, and ways you can serve. If you are not able to make the meeting, but already know you want to help, email me at robp@fbcparkstreet.com and I’ll put you on our list of volunteers.

I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday, either in-person or on Livestream, as we continue our summer sermon series entitled Summer of Psalms. Please read Psalm 56 in preparation for Sunday’s sermon.

It's a joy to be your pastor,

Pastor Rob
