Sunday at DCC
ONE Sunday Service at 10:30 a.m. and Live-Streamed at 10:30 a.m. on the DCC YouTube Channel
August 7 - September 4, DCC will offer one Sunday service at 10:30 a.m., followed by Zoom Café and refreshments on the C Street patio after the service.
Throughout the ages, God’s people have faced times of uncertainty and struggle leading to a range of responses, sometimes bold and faithful, other times fearful and divisive. When going through the wilderness, a season of transition that shakes one to the core, how might faith and practice be sustained by core gospel values, communal discernment and spiritual courage?
Please welcome back to DCC The Rev. Dr. Mary E. Westfall, Transitional Executive Presbyter for North Central California Presbytery, who will preach on Sunday. Growing up in Colorado, she is the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and was ordained in 1988, having attended San Francisco Theological Seminary. She has served in urban, suburban, and university settings, including an 18-month stint at Davis Community Church. Her doctoral work in Environmental Ethics led to teaching for a number of years and her passion for faith-based community organizing has provided her the opportunity to engage with diverse communities in California and elsewhere. She serves on the Board of Directors of Sacramento Area Congregations Together (SacACT) and is active in interfaith justice work locally and nationally.
Summer Choir Do you love to sing? Want to give the choir a try? This is your chance!
The Summer Choir will shift to 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, August 7 & 21.
Meet at 10 a.m. in the Music Room and rehearse a short anthem for the 10:30 a.m. service.
We hope to see you there!
Emma Turnbull, Minister of Music
Alert readers will notice a name change.
Coffee Hour is now Coffee Connect.
It generally doesn't run for an hour and we thought an update was in order.
It isn't really about the refreshments; it's about the connections we make. New Name: Coffee Connect!
Zoom Café
Zip over to Zoom after the service and join in the discussion. In a small group, you will have an opportunity to share your thoughts and meet friends online.
Vaccination Required
We continue to require full vaccination, including one booster shot, or testing within 72 hours of events at DCC. A second booster shot is recommended for all who are eligible.
10:30 a.m. service: N95, KN95 or KN94 masks continue to be required. This precaution provides protection for vulnerable congregants and allows young, unvaccinated children to be in the Sanctuary.
On Campus – Masking Highly Recommended
DCC's Session continues to HIGHLY RECOMMEND, but not require, masking indoors as we return to our in-person activities. Having said that, groups are encouraged to discuss and agree to the precautions they will take so that everyone in the group feels safe. Groups may choose to require more, but not less, stringent precautions.
For all who attend Sunday School, we require proof of full vaccination, including booster shots for all who are eligible.
Discovery Time (DT) is a short in-person Bible story time offered in the Sanctuary during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, and is followed by Sunday School. Children attending DT will be asked to follow the same COVID precautions as those attending the service: i.e., full vaccination (as eligible) or testing within 72 hours of events at DCC, and high-quality masks. Everyone age 2 and over will be required to wear an N95, KN95 or KF94 mask while indoors. We have additional masks of this kind on hand.
For children who do not wish to go into the Sanctuary for DT, or who cannot be vaccinated or test, childcare will be provided outdoors and DT will be available for you to watch from home on the DCC YouTube channel. For all children attending Sunday School or other childcare sessions, please be sure to bring proof of vaccination for your children, or email a photo of their card tokate@dccpres.org.
Marti Abbott in Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Marti Abbott works with a program called “Chispa” which means “Spark” in Spanish. It is a non-governmental organization (NGO) developed and managed by Sara Burkes Brakhane. Chispa is installing libraries in elementary schools in Honduras -- 70 so far! This one was co-sponsored by “Nina”, an NGO in Honduras whose aim is to support very poor girls with school fees and uniforms so they can remain in school. Marti visited in 2020 and again in May 2022. Marti was the financial sponsor for this particular library. She had no idea they would name it for her! It was a total surprise! Such a blessing she is to all of us!
All in the Family
We are happy to report that Atria/Covell Gardens Senior Living is no longer on lockdown due to a COVID outbreak....Mary Sprifke asks for prayers as she attends a funeral next week for her brother, Don Shields and nephew, Bill Shields May this family heal from this heavy burden of grief.

Update: Interim Pastor Nominating Committee
The Interim Pastor Nominating Committee is a subcommittee of the Session, our governing board. So far, we have identified 3 candidates for the interim position. The sub-committee is reviewing the applicants and doing preliminary work. Once the review is complete, the entire Session will make the decision to extend an offer to a candidate who will provide pastoral leadership during our search for a head pastor. We are optimistic we will have an interim pastor in early fall and plan to provide updates as things progress.

What's the Deal With the Dead Birds? They're not real! You may have noticed what appears to be dead crows hanging from the trees on the C Street patio. These decoy crows act as a deterrent to crows that make a mess on the patio. The decoys appear to be effective!
Last Call for Pastor Chris' Books Chris was culling books right to the end! They are on the stage in Fellowship Hall and you are welcome to take whatever you like. We will donate the books to Friends of the Library this week. So this is the time to wander over and take a look!

Coffee Connect Crew! The Session has worked hard to trim the budget this year. We will be doing Coffee Connect without hiring for the host position. We can do this!
Can you help out?
In August, Coffee Connect will shift to after the 10:30 a.m. service. Deborah Joy will prepare the coffee, decaf and hot water each week. We need one person 11:10-12:30 p.m. to set up, set out, and clean up after coffee hour. You are welcome to team up with a friend, but it really is a simple job.

Blessing of the Backpacks is an opportunity to start the school year off with a blessing for a great year to come. During worship, our children will be invited to bless the grownups in their lives (parents/guardians/educators), and the adults, in turn, will offer a blessing for the children. These moments of transition can be important for children’s formation as they learn what it means to mark meaningful occasions through a lens of faith. It is also a gift to be empowered to bless one another through simple words and gestures. We hope you join us for this special occasion!

Florilegium collaborative: a place for young(ish) adults to explore Christian faith in a supportive space. Affectionately called Flo CoLab, we collectively decide the subjects and materials we want to study together as we each seek to understand and practice our faith. We aim to be rooted in and wrestling with this faith, to explicitly consider multiple perspectives, and to build community. While we may study deep topics, we focus on building relationships and having fun. We welcome young(ish) adults to our weekly meetings.

Wednesday Zoom Prayer Gathering
You're Invited!
The "Zoom Prayer Room" opens at 11:50 a.m. which allows time to connect with others before the prayer time begins. At 12:05 p.m. we'll grow quiet and prepare for prayer.
The Community Men’s Talk Circle is a forum for men for all ages: 18 and older. We meet monthly, on the second Wednesday, from 7 – 9 p.m., on Zoom. The link is below.
It may help new men to know that the Talk Circle has been meeting for the past 11 years. It allows men of three generations to talk openly, free of advice, of that which holds meaning to them. We know that many men gain greater clarity to their issues, as they talk aloud and feel heard. The Talk Circle allows men who have never done any men’s work before to talk, as they feel ready. The Talk Circles are confidential, free of charge and all men are welcome!
What is Sacred Space? Sacred Space is a contemplative worship space that will be offered once a month at9 a.m. in the sanctuary beginning sometime in the fall. The service seeks to enrich our worship experience and expand our outreach to meet the spiritual needs of those who consider themselves “spiritual but not religious.” We seek to create a more contemplative worship experience that focuses on integrating ancient and contemporary spiritual practices from diverse traditions that appeal to the senses, silence, meditation, and ritual embodiment.
How is Sacred Space different from our current service? Sacred Space is much more of an open, meditative space that invites the community to engage in spiritual practices as they feel led. This emphasis has similarities to more traditional expressions of corporate contemplation, e.g. Taize. preaching, hymns, and traditional order of worship will be offered at all the other services.
