Introduction new financial director Danny Luciana

My name is Danny Luciana and as of 1 September I am the successor to Wouter Hankel as the managing director of CARIM. As of August, I have been working at Maastricht University for 13 years. In my previous position, I worked as a concern controller, where I was responsible for the planning & control cycle at UM level. Prior to that, I worked as a controller at the service center Finance and the school MHeNs. It is therefore nice to be back at the faculty FHML.

I live in the village of Ulestraten. I like to spend my free time with my wife Ellen and our sons Dantay (12) and Lemar (9) as well as with family and friends. We can really enjoy good food. I also like to go to the gym.

It is great to be working for CARIM now and I look forward to meeting you all in person in the coming period!

Kind regards,
Danny

Dekker Clinical Scientist grant Job Verdonschot

Job Verdonschot has received one of the 10 Dekker grants awarded by the Dutch Heart Foundation.

The Clinical Scientist grant of € 245,000 will allow him to boost his research focusing on helping the family members of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Heart muscle diseases can arise from hereditary causes. As a result, they mainly occur in certain families. They can cause severe heart failure and/or cardiac arrest. It is vital to detect these diseases in time. That is why first-degree relatives of patients are also advised to have their heart examined regularly.

Grant joint project UM - Hasselt

Dr Miranda Nabben and Dr Joost Luiken from the Department of Genetics and Cell Biology, together with researchers Jeroen Bogie and Jerome Hendrix from Hasselt University (Diepenbeek campus), have been awarded grant from an application round to promote collaboration between the Universities of Maastricht and Hasselt. The project proposal aims to study the common role of the fatty acid transporter CD36 in two different diseases: Diabetic Cardiomyopathy (Maastricht) and Multiple Sclerosis (Hasselt). Particular emphasis is placed on a specific post-translational modification of CD36, called palmitoylation, which the researchers hypothesise that this process is altered in both diseases. Both research teams will synchronise their techniques to study CD36 palmitoylation in both diseases. The award involves the appointment of a joint PhD student for a period of 4 years who will work partly in Maastricht and partly in Hasselt.

Julia is born

On 17 June at 12.15 hour Lynn gave birth to a beautiful daughter named Julia. She weighed almost 4200 gram and was 54 cm long at birth. The family is doing well.

We congratulate Lynn, Bjorn and Lucas with the birth their daughter and sister and wish them a lot of happiness together.

UM Vidi workshop 2022

Are you writing a Vidi proposal this year? Could you benefit from feedback by peers and an experienced funding advisor? Then the UM Vidi workshop might be for you!

On Tuesday 20 and Thursday 22 September, the UM funding advisors are organizing two Vidi workshops: one for the SSH domain, and one for the Medical, (Life) Science and Engineering domains. During this workshop, you will receive feedback on your draft Vidi proposal from UM peers, as well as a UM funding advisor. You will also provide feedback on two draft proposals, written by UM colleagues.
Due to the limited number of participants, a selection process will take place based on the level of completion of your draft proposal, and CV.

Therefore, we ask you to register yourself as soon as possible if you want to participate (registration is possible until 25 August using the link below). Once you have registered, you will receive a link to upload your draft Vidi proposal, together with a statement (e.g. email) from your manager/ supervisor explaining that you will be given an embedding guarantee. The deadline for this is 1 September. Upon receipt of all materials, a selection is made based on the level of completion of your draft proposal and CV. You are informed whether you can participate in the workshop no later than 8 September.

Sophie van de Walle, 1st Harry Crijns Research Grant winner looks back

Last year, I received the Harry Crijns Research Grant.
At the time, I participated in the HCRG with a project that was completely new and therefore in development. METC approval had yet to be applied for and details were still being worked out.
Over the past few months, we have worked very hard to set up all partnerships, develop all ideas in more concrete terms and obtain all medical ethical approvals. I am therefore proud to announce that we have now received approval from the METC and have fully commenced the LANDMARC study!

Currently, we have placed the markers presented at the CARIM symposium in two patients undergoing CABG and have collected residual tissue from these patients for further analysis. We will therefore soon receive the first results from the first postoperative imaging of these patients, which will allow us to take measurements between the placed markers. The money from the HCRG will be used to fund this post-operative imaging.

Winning the HCRG has especially ensured that, in addition to the current collaborations, even more collaborations have been started. Thanks to the many insights of enthusiastic professionals, who joined us even after winning the HCRG, the LANDMARC study has actually grown into a study in which various specialisms work together scientifically to improve the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
On 17 September, I will be presenting at the RESCAR congress in Margraten. I hope to enthuse even more people about this project.

You can still register your project for the Harry Crijns Research Grant 2022 and compete for the 25.000 euro. Click here for more information. Closing date is 15 September 2022. The winner will be announced at the CARIM Symposium on 16 November.

Information meeting: European funding opportunities

On Thursday 13 October from 10.00 until 12.00, the National Contact Points (NCP) Horizon Europe Health and the funding advisors of FPN and FHML are organizing an in-house information meeting about European funding opportunities.

During this information meeting, the NCPs will present the Health work programme 2023-2024. They will discuss the different themes of the programme and they will discuss how to prepare an application. In addition, they will provide information about related programmes such as EU4Health, Digital Europe and European partnerships (e.g. IHI and EDCTP3), and the opportunities that these programmes offer.
If you are interested in this meeting and if you would like to participate, please register before 6 October using this link: https://maastrichtuniversity.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_a42JBDITdlFBlu6

In addition to the general information meeting, potential main and co-applicants are given the opportunity to pitch and discuss their project ideas with the NCP Horizon Europe Health in the afternoon (between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.). So, if you are planning to apply for a European Health grant in 2023-2024 and would like to discuss this in a personal, 30 minutes-session with the NCP. Please fill in the registration form and send to grantsoffice-fhml@maastrichtuniversity.nl before 3 October. For this personal meeting with NCP, we also ask you to prepare a pitch of max. 5 minutes about your proposal.

Integrating multiplex immunofluorescent and mass spectrometry imaging to map myeloid heterogeneity in its metabolic and cellular context

Cells often adopt different phenotypes that are dictated by tissue-specific or local signals (such as cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts or the molecular micro-environment). This holds in extremis for macrophages, with their notoriously high phenotypic plasticity. Their broad range of functions, some even opposing, reflects their heterogeneity, and a multitude of subsets has already been described in different tissues or often even within the same tissue. Upon disease and the accompanying appearance of additional signals, this heterogeneity becomes even more complex.

The effect of the local micro-environment on macrophage phenotypes cannot be adequately studied by single-cell applications such as scRNAseq or cytometry, as these require cells to be detached from their context, while histology-based assessment lacks the phenotypic depth due to limitations in marker combination. A newly-developped 15-plex multispectral imaging approach allows for cell and subset classification based on multi-marker expression patterns. Integrating this information with additional measurements (such as mass spectrometry imaging performed at M4I) not only allows to map macrophage heterogeneity over the tissue but also to link the location of phenotypes to specific cellular, molecular and metabolic niches in complex tissue. The power of this approach was illustrated for macrophage subsets and their associated lipid signatures in murine atherosclerotic plaques.

Cover Cell Metabolism by Valeria Saar-Kovrov

The cover for the August issue of Cell Metabolism was created by Valeria Saar-Kovrov, a PhD candidate at the Experimental Vascular Pathology group. The illustration was inspired by the works of Dutch artist M. C. Escher and depicts how continued progress of scientific methods allows us to unveil higher levels of cellular heterogeneity.
