Fly Fishing Update:
Despite warmer temperatures, excellent summer fishing continues on the 'Mo. With Tricos, Caddis and Hoppers still producing fish, anglers have multiple opportunities to experience summer dry fly fishing in Montana! Over the next week, we will see daily highs ranging from 79°-100°F. Sunny conditions, with periods of brief thunderstorms in some late afternoons. Water temperatures are getting to the upper 60's. This is the time of year to exercise extra caution when handling fish. Try to fish the mornings, use stronger tippet to land fish quickly, and minimize handling/air exposure. Wade fishing cooler tributaries is also an option, this time of year. Speak with one of our fishing experts to figure out how to access these local gems!
Tricos are still coming off strong, with some anglers choosing to focus on sunken/drowned Tricos. Hoppers are producing some incredible takes! With high sun, blue skies and warmer weather, anglers should practice their cast from the seated position. Standing in the drift boat, this time of year, can spook fish well beyond your casting range. With that said, this is one of the best hopper "hatches" in recent memory. The dry fly fishing has impressed all year long. Make sure you practice your reach cast before heading out on the 'Mo!
Nymphing eddies and shallow fast water has produced excellent fish. Just beware of the weeds! While the weeds provide great fish habitat, flies can hang up easily. A quick roll cast or haul should rid your flies of any debris and get you back in the strike zone. Anglers are finding most of their success before 2:00PM.
Streamer fishing continues to be slow, but anglers wanting to scratch that itch are have been targeting carp in the reservoirs!
