Lessons on Filial Piety from the Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra

The seventh lunar month is also known as the Auspicious Month of Filial Piety. During this month, devotees participate in different pujas and make offerings to remember and honour ancestors and deceased loved ones. The Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Puja conducted during the Auspicious Month of Filial Piety is based on the Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra (the filial piety sutra). The stories and teachings within invites devotees to reflect on their relationship with their parents and their duty towards them.

The sutra contains two stories of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's past lives and how his acts of filial piety saved his mothers from hell and inspired him to become a Bodhisattva:

In one of his past lives, his deceased mother was disparaging towards the Triple Gem while the other enjoyed killing and slandering. These actions caused both his deceased mothers to accumulate enough negative karma to fall into hell. In a bid to save them, he made continual prayers and offerings to the Buddha. The merits he accumulated through his filial actions were enough to help both his mothers escape hell, with one being reborn into the heavenly realm and the other eventually attaining Buddhahood. In both lives, he also learned about the endless torture that beings endure in hell, and vows to liberate all beings of suffering and cultivate Buddhahood. With those noble vows, he becomes Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.

Within the sutra, Buddha’s mother, Lady Maya, asks Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva the retributions of beings who created negative karma. Ksitigarbha lists the actions that would cause one to fall into hell – failure to be filial is first on the list. He noted that people who have not been filial to their parents or caused harm to them, would pass on from natural disasters and fall into Endless Hell, an inescapable hell realm. They would be subjected to eternal suffering, and chances of being reborn in higher realms would be extremely difficult.

The sutra leaves instructions on how devotees can help alleviate deceased parents and loved ones from suffering in the afterlife. Accumulated merits from 7 days of continual prayer to Ksitigarghba Bodhisattva will allow them to be reborn in the heavenly realms and enjoy eternal bliss.

In the sutra, the Buddha describes that dedicating merit towards their own family would benefit the family for a few generations. The sutra also reminds devotees that expanding their dedication of merit towards all sentient beings in the Dharma world would bring about uncountable merits.

From 18 August to 26 August, Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery will conduct a 9-day Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Puja. Venerables will lead devotees in chanting The Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra, praying for world peace, the liberation of the deceased and blessings for the living. Join us in this meaningful event to pay gratitude to our parents and deceased loved ones by dedicating the merits from this chanting to end their suffering and for their rebirth in the heavenly realms.

Dharma Q & A

Q:How can we purify negative karma?

Purification is very important as it prevents future suffering and relieves guilt. By purifying our minds, we are able to have greater peace, and have better ability to understand the Dharma. The four opponent powers used to purify negative imprints
or seeds are:

1. Regret
2. Determination to never repeat the action
3. Taking the Threefold Refuge and generating compassion towards others
4. Actual remedial practice (Positive action—including apologising, making possible amends, practising meditation and chanting)

The four opponent powers must be done repeatedly. As we have done many negative actions, we cannot expect to counteract all of them at once. The stronger the four opponents powers are, the firmer our determination not to repeat the action and the more powerful the purification will be.
