FROM THE BOARD
OTB/Sailing School Update: Since last week’s update I am pleased to announce we have now received from the City of Greater Geelong our Construction Licence and Heads of Agreement Documents. We met yesterday to review the Heads of Agreement and it has now been returned to the City of Greater Geelong for their final updates ready for signing.
Board Member Chris Manton has a planning meeting with our architects to review the reasons for some of the cost escalations.
Now that we have our Construction Licence, we can look at relocating the East Gate, be it permanent or temporary, to its new location. This will give us more space in the yard and improve our boat storage.
2022 AGM: Our AGM will be held on Thursday 25th August 2022 at 6.30 pm. At its meeting on Monday 25 July 2022, the Board resolved the following: Voting on Special Resolutions will be either through absentee voting or by attending the AGM in person or via Zoom. Voting for the Board Elections, as previously advised to members, will be either through Absentee Voting or via attending the club over the two days prior to the AGM, being Tuesday 23 August 2022 and Wednesday 24 August 2022: 8.30 am to 6.00 pm each day. As we require 10% of members at the AGM to have a quorum, I encourage all our members who can attend the meeting in person or via Zoom to please do so. For more details: Click HERE.
Board Elections: Nominations for the Board closed at 5:00 pm today. Thank you to all of our Members who nominated for Board positions. These nominations can be seen on the notice board in the Member's Bar.
RGYC Volunteers: With our Sailability Program on hold, some of our members have found they had time on their hands. Not wanting to sit around, they have become involved in a great Community Program. Feed Me Bellarine - Geelong turns leftover food into nutritious meals and delivers them to people in need across the Bellarine and Geelong Regions.
Their Vision: To get every hospitality and food outlet in Geelong and the Bellarine on a food waste program. We can feed our Community. Their Mission: By saving food from landfill, creating connections, and helping those that need a hand. For as little, or as long as they need. No Questions. No Agendas.
RGYC Members Alan Goss, Noreen Smith, Tom & Denise Smeaton volunteer their time with food handouts to those in need. Well done to all involved. To contact Feed Me Click HERE.
Membership Category Changes: As previously stated the proposed Rule changes in the Special Resolutions will be presented to the Members at the AGM on Thursday 25th August 2022. We encourage our members to review and fully understand these proposed changes that are designed to make our club more engaging and inclusive for ALL our members.
Commonwealth Games: We have been advised this week that Australian Sailing, in conjunction with World Sailing, are submitting an expression of interest to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. The EOI will be to have sailing accepted as a medal sport for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. Should Australian Sailing be successful, Geelong and RGYC will be the preferred host. An announcement is expected after the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
PAST & UPCOMING EVENTS
Wednesday Member’s Night: The Member’s Draw last night was won by Steph McDonald, so next week we will be back to one bottle of wine. The next Wednesday night activity will see Bully presenting on August 17th, looking at 'Unlocking the Racing Rules of Sailing'.
Friday Night Member’s Draw: The Member’s Draw has jackpotted to $150 and we will have 1 slab of Carlton Draught. Harry’s Foundation Meat Raffle is on as usual. Board Member Laura Cora is our OOD. It was pleasing last week to see such a good turnout of members and guests who enjoyed a meal from the Yot.
New Members Night: Will be held on Friday 12th August in the west lounge. We have not held a new members' night since June 2021, so we are expecting a good turnout. Please make all our new members feel welcome in our club.
RGYC Sailing: The Davidson’s Winter Series was held last Saturday with the running of Race 5 for all fleets. A perfect winter’s day, clear skies, and a great breeze for the good fleet of 19 boats on Alpha, 11 in Div 1 and 8 in Div 2. The OTB Winter Series had a total of 12 boats, 7 Cadets and 5 Mixed Fleet, this gave us 120 members on the water. Thanks to all our members who supported Lulu Di Sciascio with her fundraiser.
QCYC KISS Program: On Saturday RGYC Member’s Fiona Tremaine and Laura Cora onboard SecOnda participated to the QCYC KISS program ( Keelboat Introduction to Sailing Savvy) Passage race from Altona to QCYC. This education program was aimed at women who wanted to build their knowledge and confidence to take an active role on a yacht. On board SecOnda there were 5 Kiss participants mentored for the day by Peter Strain, Commodore of RBYC. The crew enjoyed a day with variable conditions, from no wind to 18/20 knots alternating all roles and completing a log for the radio and navigation prize. RGYC member Fiona Tremaine won the very well deserved navigation prize presenting an impeccable logbook. Well done Fiona for the great achievement and well done Lee Renfree, Commodore of QCYC for a successful KISS program!
The Yot Cafe Update: We would like to inform members that the reason for the change of operators is due to an injury sustained by Andrea, and we wish her all the best for a complete recovery.
The planning to bring the Yot Café in-house is progressing well and we are fortunate to have both Nigel and Rob on our staff. The Business Plan is now in the first Draft and the team is looking at operational issues to be ready for a smooth transition and start-up on the 17th of August. We will retain The Yot name but will add Café & Bistro. I look forward to our members giving this new RGYC initiative their full support.
50 Year Members Lunch: With the lunch fast approaching we are now looking to get a great guest speaker, so put the date in your diary. Lunch will be held on Friday 16th September, one week before the AFL Grand Final.
My Thought of the Week: “On the other side of a storm is the strength that comes from having navigated through it. Raise your sail and begin.” - Gregory S. Williams
