🎶 Every memory of kicking out the back line 🎶 - Chad Kruger, Photograph

By Clinton Beale

As an elder statesman of the team, it’s a sad fact that my memory ain’t what it used to be. Where I once had the ability to recount a match kick by kick, a player based on their number or the boots they were wearing, now I must rely upon memorable moments or persistent themes to re-conjure images of our glorious victories. Thus, our 15.19-109 victory over the woeful ‘tricolours’ (the fuck is that mascot) shall be recalled through a collection of vignettes, snapshots, comparisons and flashes that are the puzzle pieces of my memory.

Sharp sounds and long distances
Edward Snowden and Julian Assange must have secretly made their way to South Oval to officiate, as never in my life have I heard a whistle blown so often. 50 meters was seemingly the length of the day, and thus a collection of ways to measure the march up-field:

1. Blue whale
0.5 Line up length outside the clurb to a filthy DJ Kelly set
28 Aidans stacked upon one another
36 Aidan Pini’s stacked upon one another
50 1m tape measures
3    Al Thorne brash, bursting, bouncing, brilliant runs
1. Length of Tuanny’s nose when he tells you he doesn’t love footy
50.Beers demolished by Shaun Wilkey the night of the 2020 granny
1. AMH (the slug)

Thank you to Aidan and Louis for some really good and funny suggestions there.

Wilko Wilkinson
It’s official: Wilko got ‘That Dawg’ in him and didn’t we love it! (He actually ran into me after he wrecking balled like 8 Ainslie players and it really hurt. I’m still waiting for an apology).

“Hey, there’s been a Robbery”
If you didn’t know, there was a pre-match robbery, ‘robbing’ a few of the lads the chance to earth with their teammates center field. This encounter potentially manifested in a pent up Nathe Lanham being sent off, I’m assuming just to round out the frustration of the day.

My key suspects in the case:
  1. Aidan Mitchell: Lives directly behind the victims. Could use some extra cash. Was recently looking to sell his car. Has been known to look through windows suspiciously.
  2. Nathe: The perfect inside job. If there’s anyone who could pull it off it’s Nathe Lanham the diamond dabbler. (Harry ‘the General’ Campbell has been exonerated of all suspicion due to his strong connection to the backline brotherhood, and after the submission of character references each pointing to his good character, strong leadership and wicked sense of humour by Wello Wellington, DizzyGuy, Gov, Big Beery, Louis Young, Earnest Eden, Elfy and Poony)
  3. Tim Robb/Robbie Evans: As they say, it’s all in the name.
  4. Jack Dadley: With a lil’ bub on the way, Hads must surely be looking for the little fellas first vehicle to plonk a high-powered V8 inside. Speaking of, no v8 exhaust propelled gender reveal Hads? I’m slightly disappointed (just kidding congrats mate we luv ya and congrats on 50 games!).

The returnees (football & non-football related absences)
Josh ‘very very good at footy’ Macdessi, Harry ‘the General’ Campbell, Daniel ‘Prince of 122’ Vardon & Gus ‘son of DizzyGuy’ Dowdle all made stunning returns from both football and non-football related absences. Despite some waning commitment to the football club (I’m specifically looking at you and your trip to America, Prince), it was delightful to have the guys back. I think Vards kicked a goal, Josh was zipping through traffic as usual, Haz was generally splendificous and son of DizzyGuy resembled Dash from the Incredibles as per usual. Welcome home friends!

Behinds
The big ones boys!

The game
From memory it was a pretty good game. We flogged Ainslie and kicked heaps of behinds. I kicked a sick goal (according to Wello) which I apologise for to my backline brethren. Apparently 4Ps was good. I liked all the different P words on the board that got posted in the group chat. My favourite one was Pini cos I like Pini a lot. He’s a good bloke.

Tri-colours need to tri-harder xoxo

By Eliza 'Lizey' Shalders

It was an absolute day for it, sun was out, Ines huge biceps were out and unlike the previous Tuesday night it was at least 5 degrees. As the last home game of the season and with the prospect of the hugely anticipated and mysterious 4Ps that night, the Buzz was ready for a big one. Being the third game in 7 days legs were probably not as fresh as they usually would be, but no one was about to gift Ainslie a win and the team was as per usual stacked with talent and depth. However, as I’m apparently now one for dramatics I pulled out last minute. This occurred for a number of reasons but mostly because the family motto on the footy field is two Shalders or no Shalders, so due to Grace’s concussion I had to honour my ancestors wishes. Lucky really because three minutes earlier I’d been gifted the treat of writing this griff tale! So I’m stoked to have gotten the opportunity to really hone my craft while without the distraction of playing.

Now because we are a team of honour, integrity, intensity, accountability, and strength Ainslie dropping down a significant amount of 1s players phased exactly no one, but it should be acknowledged that Ainslie played an incredibly hard game. They were full to the brim with shit chat and while I’ve heard rumours that it was returned tenfold by the buzz, everyone was tested both mentally and physically with almost every single ball being contested. Roy (my hero) started us off with an incredible tap out of the centre and her and Abby continued to obliterate their ruck throughout the rest of the game. Greta back from uni break had lost none of her insane ability to pick up any footy and take on a pack, Kouts and Sheriff were linking up left and right and the Buzz came out strong in the first quarter kicking 2.2 to Ainslie’s 0.1.

The second quarter was significantly tighter with every footy being hard won. Babs and Annie were sprinting into contests and then out with the ball in hand, Ine was as usual busy breaking through tackles and Rozie and Jemma were keeping the wings locked down. Huge shout out to Lezly our well-deserved mug winner, who came off for a total of 2 minutes with a dislocated finger in the most relaxed way I’ve ever seen and then literally marched herself straight back onto the field. The back six were invaluable as always, compared to the previous game in Gungahlin they had to pull out all of the stops and did so very successfully keeping Ainslie to 3 behinds the entire time. Power and Rasche proving once again that while one Lauren is good two is even better.

No goals were kicked in the second but no one dropped their head and following a mild spray from Del and encouraging words from Rasche (our illustrious captains have varying leadership styles and I like that it can be very dynamic), everyone picked up the intensity for the second half. Our VC Gigi was reading the ball like no-one else, always under it and making sure every ball was contested and Sissi was dodging and weaving their way through all sorts of traffic. And AP, who has only known AFL is a sport for like 6 weeks, played another incredible game and will probably be drafted within another 6. The Buzz finished on a high with a final score of 36-3, keeping our win streak against Ainslie alive and well!

So I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to say about 4Ps but I feel it should absolutely get a mention. A highlight of the Griffs social calendar it was well worth the 3 year wait! P*** were thrown, serenaded and eaten and it was a joyous occasion. I’m personally stoked to finally know the secrets and thrilled to be part of the mass gatekeeping that will inevitably occur the next time someone asks, “what do the Ps stand for?”.

4P's (ressies adaption)

Police
The three stooges we have as coaches continued their good cop/bad cop approach with Andrew Nilon aptly filling the role of the ‘very serious take-no-shit cop’, Angus McKelvie-Hill going for ‘seems chatty but could land me in trouble cop’, and Jordan Kelly rounding out the line-up with ‘probably an undercover cop’. It’s not yet clear whether they will opt for a role reversal come finals but as players we will be watching with interest.

Punctuality
The importance of this was emphasised by the chatty cop in his pre-match plea for a 10am arrival. I’d like to claim to be the most punctual person at the club after I turned up to South Oval at 6am as instructed by Alex Bell-Rowe for the purposes of an intimate gathering between him, me, Clint, Louis, and Mounty. Of course, Bell-Rowe himself was a no-show which was terribly disappointing as I know he would’ve enjoyed the sunrise. IYKYK AMIRITE. No worries Bell-Rowe…

Performance
Was strong. We won by 112 points. Not much more to say. Apols for giving away the free that gave Ainslie their sole goal. Yeatesy had 1200m gained for the game I reckon (+3,000m of running/kicks/handballs –1,800m of conceded 50m penalties nets out at 1,200m). Jono Dean kicked 5 but otherwise mostly kept to himself. Big Ben Harris got in on the action up forward. Skronk and Darc Sheahan were clunking grabs from everywhere. Chatty cop and serious cop did a lot of running. Justo Butler dominated.

Profitable
Chatty cop turns out to be a very accomplished gambler, race caller, and auctioneer; which in no way conflicts with his role as an officer of the law (I come from QLD and can attest that horse racing and policing are naturally kindred pursuits). There were many beneficiaries of his exploits on the grid dice setup but I reckon Hef got the best dividend. Darcy Sheahan also notably won a horse race and paid about $5 on TAB if memory serves correct. Good on ya Darce!
