THE PERFECT NIGHT

Last night was one of those nights where everything came together for a perfect night. We had tickets to see Smokey Robinson at the Count Basie, so we started the night at one of our favorite restaurants, Buona Sera, right around the corner from the theater.

Buona Sera has a great NYC vibe about it and whether you eat in the main dining room, the mezzanine or outside, there's always great people watching. The weather cooperated so we sat outside and had plenty of time to enjoy our meal before the show. The staff is well-trained and fun and enhance the enjoyment of the meal. Fantastic menu with lots of choices, but here are some favorites; Mozzarella in Carrozza. Lightly Breaded Italian Toast with Mozzarella Cheese served in a Anchovy White Wine Lemon Reduction; Sardinian Pizza (OMG), made with Cultured Dough imported from Sardinia; Pasta Fagioli (best I have ever had); Tortellini Carbonara. Homemade tortellini served in a pancetta cream sauce; Pork Paillard. Thinly pounded, grilled and served with pancetta and onions over gnocchi in a sweet vermouth sauce and the best Veal Chops you will ever have. Summer brings the 5lb lobster for $80. Big portions, so come hungry. Excellent and fairly priced wine list. By the way, if you are looking for a venue for a private party under 40 people, their Wine Cellar is fantastic.

Count Basie is a wonderful and intimate setting for top name entertainers. Our tickets were third row from the back in the orchestra seating and they were fine. Serve cocktails to take to your seat!. Here's the schedule of performers.

THE WINE CORNER

2015 El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva. $29.99 Available at The Bottle Shop, Spring Lake

Made of a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano, El Coto's Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is a beautiful expression of the Rioja region in Spain. Aged 24 months in American and French oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 36 months of maturing in the bottle, this Gran Reserva is from a vineyard dating back to 1548.

Brilliant ruby color, with russet tones. Mature and elegant, its aromatic richness is changing and subtle, becoming more apparent as the wine breathes. Notes of toast and coconut followed by tertiary aromas (leather, earth), and red fruit and dried fruit. Round, silky tannins, persistent and complex aftertaste. Ideal accompaniment for roast suckling lamb, game, or red meat.  READ MORE

FIND YOUR BEST WEEKEND - NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans is small as major cities go, ranking 51st in terms of population with about 360,000 people. But, it casts a big shadow in the food and music worlds and is one of the country’s most popular travel destinations. Steeped in history with an ethnically diverse population, it is one of the country’s most interesting cities.

The city sits on an 8 mile strip of land between the Mississippi River and Lake Ponchartrain. The infamous French Quarter makes up the heart of the city and the Central Business District and Warehouse District lie just across Canal Street. A short streetcar ride takes you to the beautiful Garden District, home to the magnificent  Greek columned mansions. See the BestWeekends New Orleans Profile for recommendations on where to stay and eat.
