Adult Summer Reading wraps up this month with a movie night and three final book discussions
 While we're heading into the last month of our 2022 Adult Summer Reading Program, Secrets of the Deep, we still have lots of opportunities to participate! Join us this Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. for an outdoor movie night at our temporary location, 6900 Delmar Blvd. Keeping with the oceanic theme of our summer, we'll be watching the critically acclaimed 2002 feature film Whale Rider. Despite being disregarded by her grandfather and shunned by the rest of her Maori tribe, 11-year-old Pai believes she's destined to become the tribal leader, challenging her family and tradition at the same time. Written and directed by Niki Caro, Whale Rider is a contemporary story of love, tradition, rejection, and triumph. This family-friendly event is free and open to all.
In addition to the movie night, we'll also host our final three Zoom-based book discussions of our 2022 Adult Summer Reading program this month. On Monday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m., our Orcs & Aliens book group will discuss the modern Malaysian-set fantasy novel Black Water Sister by Zen Cho. Our Read the Classics group will tackle Jules Verne's nautical classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16. Finally, the UCity Book Group will discuss Nathaniel Philbrick's National Book Award-winning non-fiction title In the Heart of the Sea at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24.

New STEAM kits for kids are now available
 UCPL's Youth Services department is excited to announce that we now have 30 new STEAM kits for kids to check out! Made by Penworthy, these kits are filled with books and activities focusing on a wide range of science, technology, engineering, art, and math topics. There's also something for a wide range of ages, from preschoolers through pre-teens! The STEAM kits are made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

UCPL to host a panel discussion on modern segregation in St. Louis on Sept. 7
Join us at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 for Modern Segregation in St. Louis, an interactive online panel discussion featuring experts on urban culture and politics, and racial identity. This event will focus on local neighborhoods that have historically been most impacted by segregation and racial identity erasure, including Wellston, Cherokee Street, and the Delmar divide. The panel includes Washington University professors Iver Bernstein, Douglas Flowe, and Heidi Kolk, as well as University City native and Indiana University professor Eric Sandweiss. All four panelists have studied St. Louis' complex racial history extensively, and have essays featured in The Material World of Modern Segregation: St. Louis in the Long Era of Ferguson, a book-length journal that was published earlier this year by Washington University’s The Common Reader.
