Let’s make 2023 the European Year of Mental Health!

MEP Maria Walsh (Co-Chair of MHE’s Coalition for Mental Health and Wellbeing) calls for a necessary update of current EU legislation concerning mental health. MHE fully supports MEP Maria Walsh’s call for mental health to be urgently tackled by cross-sectional and integrated policies, as part of a comprehensive EU Mental Health Strategy and a European Year dedicated to Mental Health in 2023

HPP Webinar Covid-19 & mental health: Taking forward the lessons learned 

In the framework of the Covid-19 Mental Health Support Stakeholders Network on the DG SANTE Health Policy Platform (HPP), MHE is organising this Webinar on 21 September with the support of the European Commission. Rural Mental Health Project closed


The Rural Mental Health Project has come to an end but its impact will last. Other Highlights 

WHO report (July 2022) shows poorer health outcomes for many vulnerable refugees and migrants

This first WHO report of its kind shows how millions of refugees and migrants in vulnerable situations around the world face poorer health outcomes than their host communities. Health determinants (education, income, housing and other barriers) are behind these poor health outcomes. The report calls for urgent action to ensure migrants are able to access health care services.

In the Netherlands, more than 1 in 5 young people had suicidal thoughts during last lockdown

A Dutch study supported by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on the impact of COVID-19 on population health and wellbeing shows that nearly half of surveyed youth suffered from mental health issues during the last lockdown.

 Mental Health Ireland's new website for World Mental Health Month 2022 
A new suite of resources encouraging people to get involved are now available on the new website.  

 Mental Health Ireland's new guide 'Farmer Health and Safety'
The guide offers advice (tips for mental health and wellbeing) on the various health issues that pertain to farmers and their work.

 British Psychological Society (BPS) launched new campaign to make social class a protected characteristic
In a new report highlighting the psychological impact of class-based inequalities and discrimination, the BPS states that to truly tackle the widening social mobility gap, social class should be protected under the Equalities Act.

 Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy for Scotland
The new Strategy aims to do the right things to improve mental health and wellbeing for people in Scotland. The Strategy also aims to be equality and human rights-based. Penumbra is seeking views (also the views of people who have experienced mental health issues) on whether the draft overall vision and the draft outcomes are the right ones. Consultation is open until 9 September.

Speech by Commissioner Stella Kyriakides at the 2nd Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen “Ukraine and the World: The Future We (Re)Build Together”

The European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides during her speech welcomed the creation of Ukraine's National Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Program. She also voiced her concerns of the dangers of mental health trauma and how crucially important it is to address this holistically and without delay.
GoGreenRoutes Malta Nature-Based Solutions Summer School

Ecostack Innovations hosted the third Malta Nature-Based Solutions Summer School (29 June - 1 July 2022) funded by the Horizon 2020 project GoGreenRoutes. Discussions centred on the link between the environment, human well-being and mental health.

Briefing 58: Poverty, economic inequality and mental health, by Ed Davie explores the evidence about the links between these factors, showing that living in poverty increases people’s risk of mental health difficulties, and that more unequal societies have higher overall levels of mental ill health.
State of the Union EU (SOTEU) 2022  address 

As this year’s SOTEU comes amidst increasing cost-of-living, the war in Ukraine, growing energy poverty and climate change, Social Platform has identified 5 solutions to help deliver a decent life for all people. These specific areas require action at EU level in order to make substantial progress on improving people’s living standards.
PERISCOPE launches its Introductory Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Coursera 

Videos and learning materials have been grouped into thematic modules (including Ending Stigma and Improving Mental Health). The course is completely free of charge, 100% online and administered in a self-paced learning modality, with the possibility of receiving a certificate of completion.
Book by former MHE President Claude Deutsch: 'Le vol d'un condor'

Claude Deutsch gives an overview about the creation and evolution of community mental health services in France by sharing his own personal story and experience. This book is in French and can be ordered online from La Maison d'édition l'Harmattan.

New EU4Health call for tenders to support expert groups in the field of health 
All interested parties are invited to send their applications. Deadline: 7 October 2022.
 
Towards a new EU Global Health Strategy 
This initiative will develop a new global health strategy to respond to the significant changes in global health  and strengthen EU leadership in this area. This public consultation deadline: 19 September 2022.
 
European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety: Call for proposals: 2022 Thematic Networks 
The European Commission invites health stakeholders to submit proposals for a new cycle of Thematic Networks, organised under the framework of the EU Health Policy Platform.  The purpose is to produce a Joint Statement (within 6-9 months) summarising the common position and action of a group of stakeholders organisations on selected public health areas (including mental health in all policies). Submissions deadline: 31 August 2022.  
 
EU4Health call for tenders on EU preparedness: training programmes for health specialists 
A new call for tenders to organise training programmes for health specialists on the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national and EU preparedness plans. All interested parties are invited to submit applications. Deadline: 23 September 2022.
 
British Psychological Society (BPS) Early Career Researcher Reviewer Mentoring Programme 
This programme will provide early career researchers with the opportunity to train as a peer reviewer under the guidance of an experienced mentor on one of six journals in the BPS portfolio. Application deadline: 9 September 2022.
