There is only one concert left in our Autumn–Winter Season, and we thank you for continuing to make the Cultural Centre such a warm and welcoming space for artists. Very soon our Winter–Summer program will launch with a three-concert weekend from 19–21 August. Flamenco legend Paco Peña will be joined by the Grigoryan Brothers on Friday and Saturday nights, with Javier Perianes performing on Sunday afternoon.

JAVIER PERIANES

‘Javier Perianes is an artist of richly lyrical gifts.’
Gramophone

Javier has performed in the most prestigious concert halls, with the world’s foremost orchestras, collaborating with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Charles Dutoit, Zubin Mehta, Gustavo Dudamel, Klaus Mäkelä, and Simone Young. He is truly a pianist of the highest order and his most recent album – a thoughtful selection of Chopin’s Sonatas and Mazurkas – is characteristic of his refreshing and refined approach to the repertoire.

Javier’s recent and upcoming engagements include performances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, as well as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. His recital at UKARIA is one of a handful of solo appearances at revered venues, including the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin. After his performance at UKARIA, Javier will appear with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and then perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

In this recital, Javier performs music from Beethoven to Wagner, interspersed with Chopin, Granados, and Liszt. It is a carefully weighted program, energised by those two vital preoccupations of the Romantics, love and death.

TIMOTHY WAYNE-WRIGHT

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Timothy Wayne-Wright as our Choral Consultant.

Tim was a member of the Grammy award-winning a cappella vocal ensemble The King's Singers for ten years. During that time, he toured the world, singing over 1,500 concerts in some of the world's greatest venues, including London's Royal Albert Hall, Vienna's Musikverein, New York's Carnegie Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. Tim has taught over 500 masterclasses and workshops, imparting chamber music skills and techniques to choirs and instrumentalists across the globe.

Since leaving The King's Singers in 2018, he continues to thrive as part of the choral scene internationally. He's the Artistic Director of CHORALSPACE's Winter and Summer Festivals in Berlin, 2021–2023, and manages an exciting roster of artists (including The Gesualdo Six) and holds consultancy roles with vocal ensembles in both the UK and Canada. In March 2021, Tim moved to New Zealand with his Kiwi wife and two children.

Tim will provide artistic leadership in collaboration with guest artists for the next A Cappella Academy at UKARIA in late March 2023. He will also work with UKARIA staff and representatives from the Adelaide Chamber Singers, Young Adelaide Voices, and Festival Statesmen Chorus to develop a teaching program, and act as a global agent for the choirs.

Building skills in the precise art of a cappella singing is the vocal equivalent of preparing instrumentalists to perform chamber music. UKARIA is proud to support the development of local, national, and international choral traditions.

IN RESIDENCE: MARK ATKINS AND ERKKI VELTHEIM

It’s been wonderful having Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim at UKARIA for their second creative development residency over the past week. This project, Moong-ung-garh garla-gula, commissioned and produced by Tura, is supported by the Australia Council, UKARIA, and Ulrike Klein AO. There will be a showing titled Nightfalls, that is part of the Finding Our Voice project, at the Cultural Centre in October, so keep an eye out for that announcement in the newsletter and on social media.

Mark is a legendary didgeridoo virtuoso and innovator, whose music and words consistently jump borders and upset ready definitions. Erkki is a groundbreaking composer and performer, whose work spans noise, audiovisual installation, improvisation, notated music, electroacoustic composition, pop arrangements and cross-disciplinary performance.

I was fortunate enough to chat with the creative team behind Moong-ung-garh garla-gula
– Mark, Erkki and Tos Mahoney, Tura’s Artistic Director  earlier this week and the full interview will be on our website shortly.

In conversation, Mark is easy going and understated, insisting this project is just ‘something a little different’, built on ‘the little things.’ But all of those little things – forming an invitation to sit with him by firelight and hear his haunting stories – promise something new in Australian art and storytelling.

FRIENDS OF THE GARDEN

Our next Friends of the Garden morning for volunteers will be held on Tuesday 9 August, from 9.00am–12.00pm, with complimentary morning tea and coffee served at approximately 10.30am.

CONCERT FOR PEACE BY PIANIST DR ROBERT SCHMIDLI

‘Our local MAPW state committee wished to do something positive to help the Ukrainian refugees locally, and as I live close to UKARIA in Mt Barker, the idea of organising a concert seemed very attractive and we are very grateful for the opportunity to have access to put on this concert.’
– Dr Nick Wickham

Pianist Robert Schmidli has appeared with orchestras in New Zealand and Australia and performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician. Professionally, Robert practices as a specialist in endocrinology and diabetes in Canberra and rural New South Wales.

All proceeds from this piano recital will assist the Association of Ukrainians in South Australia to provide support for refugees.

SATURDAY 13 AUGUST | 7.00pm

Please note that UKARIA is not organising this event. The following link directs you to the MAPW’s ticketing page and is the only way to book for this concert.
