Recent Happenings

Soil Cycle has a new neighborhood drop off location for food scrap recycling, located in the River Road neighborhood, at MUD and Home ReSource complex. Our organizations spent an afternoon with campers from GUTS!, building and designing it together. We're calling these hubs Compost Corals - and they are our most affordable and accessible composting program.
It just got even easier to drop off your food scraps!!
The newest compost coral at MUD has gotten a lot of press!
We wanted to include some of the fun for all of you- above see the press release from founder Caitlyn Lewis via the Missoula Nonprofit Center, and below from David Erickson at the Missoulian.

Bike Hike or Run with Climate Ride!

Climate Ride produces charitable multi-day bike rides, hikes, and a DIY programs that inspire advocacy, transform lives, and fund initiatives critical to a sustainable future. Participants pick an adventure experience of their choice, and a benefactor (like Soil Cycle!) that they care about. Combined through the climate ride experience, participants raise an enormous amount of awareness and provide extraordinary contributions to the green causes they care about through fundraising efforts. By participating, folks provide much-needed financial support, raise awareness, and help to build a national network of supporters.

Like we hinted at above, Soil Cycle is lucky to be a benefactor of Climate Ride, meaning anyone who participates in a Climate Ride adventure, can choose to fundraise for our organization!

Back to complete the journey we told you about pre-pandemic, Beth Powers is back on her saddle, riding for Soil Cycle! She will be embarking upon the Maine Ride which takes place on September 21-25 when she will ride 273 miles over the 4 days. We are infinitely grateful for support of dedicated participants like Beth, that contribute to our effort of helping the planet, one scrap diverted and one bicycle wheel turned at a time.

Upcoming Events

Our last plant walk of the summer is TONIGHT from 6:30-7:30!! We look forward to these fun, informative, and tasty workshops- and hope you do too!

Thi amazing Therese “Trez” Robbins of @heartbeetherbal will be discussing many of the edibles and medicinals found in the demonstration garden at Soil Cycle. And answering all your questions too!

Last minute sign-ups and walk-ups welcome!
Join us this Thursday (August 4th) and Saturday (August 6th) for a walking or biking tour of some of our local Certified Wildlife Habitats. Each space that we create with the bugs, birds, bees, moths, and ladybugs in mind...creates a much needed network for our little friends. Keeping our gardens and yards chemical free and abundant not only aides the wildlife, but directly effects the health and our community.

Thank you to Therese, "Trez" Robbins of Heart Beet Herbal for designing the Soil Cycle demonstration garden to aide the native wildlife here in Missoula.
FIRST FRIDAY REMINDER
Soil Cycle opens our doors and welcomes folks of all ages for tours on First Fridays between 3 & 4 PM. We invite you to stop by our 1st Street location and see composting in action, take in our demonstration garden, say hello to Hera, or even grab a shovel and participate in the composting process.
We'd love to see you!
You can also usually find the Soil Cycle Crew at the Missoula's Farmers Market on the first Saturday of each month. (We celebrated the Missoula Farmer's Market 50th anniversary this last weekend so you can find as at 1st street this weekend!)
We'll meet you by the XXX's in September - grab some fresh produce for the week and come on by.

Worm castings, biochar, compost tea and more!
We aren't the only ones who love biking...Community Food & Agriculture Coalition is hosting their 4th annual Bike to Barns event!

Explore local farms and flavors on a self-guided bike tour through Missoula’s Orchard Homes, Target Range and Big Flat neighborhoods. Packages include bike route map, special farm stand offers, event T-shirt or reusable tote, BINGO game (win prizes!), and meal vouchers! Learn more here!

Your event registration fee covers event expenses as well as supports CFAC’s programs supporting local farmers, farmland conservation and local food access for all Montanans.

Fun on the Farm

We’ve been burning the ‘oil in soil this summer with awesome groups like Turner Farms farm camp, UM Climate Studies groups, home school pals, and the Boys and Girls Club of Missoula County!

We’ve investigated worms, learned about microbes and built compost cakes. Between snacking on edibles around the demonstration garden, and we even sifted finished compost to add to the garden beds!

It’s been a fun summer of education. We still have a few weeks left of summer if your group is interested in learning more about our educational experiences. We love working with our community members and ultimately believe that teaching and empowering folks about the ways that they can contribute to the sustainability of our planet is really what matters!

Hera's Happenings

These hot summer days mean lots of lounging and mandatory snuggles for our sweet gal.

When not hiding in the cool warehouse, you can find Hera rolling in wood chips or hiding in the honeyberry bushes around our demonstration site.

Stop by our site for First Friday and you might just be able to find her!

Thank You For Your Support!

With Love, from our Board and Crew!
