Dear <<First Name>>,

Earlier this week, my Ministry announced that people looking to advance their skills training would receive a boost through a new program that will help them more smoothly transition from academic upgrading to high-demand career programs.

People will be able to access 26 new pathway programs at 11 public post-secondary institutions throughout B.C. this coming school year. The pathway programs are a new Adult Basic Education and English Language Learning initiative that will help address labour shortages by better supporting students in completing the pre-requisites to transition directly into high-demand post-secondary programs of their choice.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:
Be prepared for high temperatures

This week Environment and Climate Change Canada issued heat warnings for multiple areas in B.C. due to rising temperatures. We encourage everyone to plan and prepare for high temperatures. Here are some steps you can take:
  • Find information about heat warnings and cooling centres in your region: Emergency Info BC
    • Please note that your municipality, regional district or First Nation will have the most up-to-date information.
  • Know the warning signs of heat-related illness. If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms during extreme heat, take immediate steps to cool down and seek emergency care. Learn more: preparedbc.ca/extremeheat
  • Create a heat plan to keep safe. A heat plan should identify cool zones inside and outside of homes (such as community centres and libraries), ways to cool down (such as taking cool baths or showers and drinking plenty of water) and identify vulnerable family members and neighbours who are susceptible to heat and who should be checked on.

Making it easier for evacuees to receive support

Last year’s extreme weather events made it clear how important it is to be prepared for a potential crisis. One day you may need to evacuate due to an emergency, whether it's a flood, fire or earthquake. This week, we announced that we are making it easier to receive evacuee financial support – because the last thing you need in an emergency is more paperwork. You can now pre-register to receive financial support by e-transfer, so when you need it and are eligible to receive it; you can get it quickly and easily. Here’s how:

B.C.'s largest coastline cleanup sets new targets

British Columbians care deeply about protecting our marine ecosystems. Through our Clean Coast, Clean Waters initiative, we’re funding new projects in partnership with coastal communities and Indigenous Peoples that will clean as much as 1,000 kilometres of B.C.’s coastline, remove as many as 30 derelict vessels and support local jobs.

Clean Coast Clean Waters is an important part of the CleanBC Plastics Action Plan and its goal to reduce plastic pollution.

Turning the page on adult literacy with increased funding

Literacy should never be a barrier for people, and our government values supporting people's success. We’re increasing funding to the Community Adult Literacy Program by $500,000 and investing a total of $3.5 million annually.

This funding will help people throughout the province gain essential literacy and numeracy skills that will give them more confidence in reading, writing, math and computer use.

Supporting co-ops will deliver more services to British Columbians.

A new investment of $2 million will support the development and growth of B.C.’s co-operative businesses while expanding services for people who use them. These funds will improve existing support infrastructure and identify co-op development opportunities for Indigenous communities, newcomers, marginalized groups, and rural communities.

“Co-operatives are driven by values that support a robust and equitable economy and thriving communities. This funding will empower more co-operatives to work collaboratively for British Columbians,” said Niki Sharma, Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development and Non-Profits.

New culturally informed mental-wellness supports will help Indigenous families.

Everyone deserves to have access to the mental health support they need. Indigenous families with children three to 12 experiencing big worries and fears will access free, culturally grounded wellness practices through a virtual parent and caregiver coaching program.

The program, designed for Indigenous people, will support children with big worries and their families across B.C. by integrating wellness and cultural practices.
