This year's 480 LA2050 Grants Challenge submissions are up now on la2050.org!
Today, we’re taking a look back at how we arrived at this point. From April 18th to May 6th, we opened the Grants Challenge by asking Angelenos to vote for the issues they cared about most, to help us determine our funding priorities for the year. The response was inspiring —

Thank you to all who participated and helped us to demonstrate the power of community grantmaking. We'll announce the winning organizations in September.

To spread the word about voting, we partnered with 10 organizations to host a lineup of LA2050 Listens events, from Zócalo Public Square's panel exploring the question “Can We All Live In the Best Version of Los Angeles?” to People's Yoga's free classes themed around the LA2050 goal categories and Color the Water's beach days. Together, these events engaged thousands of Angelenos in voting to determine the issues that would be funded through this year's Grants Challenge.

LA2050 YOUTH AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
|
|
|
Our first-ever LA2050 Youth Ambassador cohort also helped to activate voters in this year’s Grants Challenge. Together, the 78 Youth Ambassadors, ages to 14 to 24, engaged more than 1,000 participants! At our wrap-up celebration, one of our Youth Ambassadors, Diana S., shared: “Being able to tell voters about what the survey was interested them more. This is everyone’s community and being able to have an impact on that motivated them.”

My favorite Los Angeles places and spaces...
PLAY: I've recently been taking walks up the side of Ernest E. Debs Regional Park in my free time, and it's such a lovely, quick, but slightly challenging, walk up to a beautiful little pond. It is a great way to decompress. Also, there are always so many adorable dogs!
CREATE: One of my favorite places to be is at Green & Bisque Clayhouse in Pasadena. For all skill levels of potter, if you just want to take a day class for fun with a friend, or if you are an experienced potter looking for guest lectures/specialty firings, G&B has really brought together the creative community of ceramicists in LA for me.
CONNECT: Living right along the Gold Line, I always try to take the Metro to places when I can, as it's a great way to get to many places if you want to just take it slow and enjoy passing through the diverse neighborhoods of LA. Also, Union Station is always a beautiful place to be in. They recently ran a campaign of portraits commissioned by local LA artists that hung in the station and made me smile every time I walked by.
LEARN: I moved to Los Angeles to study Illustration at ArtCenter College of Design. The Hillside campus is a beautiful building designed by Craig Ellwood that has been deemed by the city of Pasadena as a historic landmark, so artist or not, I'd recommend everyone visit at some point to see a cool structural feat and some amazing artwork in the galleries.
LIVE: I love the proximity of LA to the Angeles National Forest, as I am an avid hiker and I love the mountains. It's so fun to explore all the different trails up there, making sure to always carry a bag to pick up any litter on the trail that I see.
