Mandela Day Painting
Mandela Month
by James Sleigh

The generosity around Mandela Day has been our July theme year after year, in honour of Mandela's birthday.  It is quite incredible that, throughout the world regardless of our backgrounds, we all still hold Mandela in such high regard and honour. He has become a symbol of forgiveness, wisdom, peace, giving. He encouraged everyone to help those around them, to help build a better and happier world. And, in the process, discover the joy that giving offers.

We try to tackle projects on Mandela Day that would otherwise not be tackled. For this Mandela Day we identified a number of areas that we wanted to upgrade, and put out word to various people and organisations. We were humbled by the overwhelming response.

We upgraded and cleaned up our entrance, we gave our Bay Leaf coffee shop a much-needed face lift. We cleared alien Port Jackson trees and vygies from two of our fodder camps and upgraded our charity shop.

A huge shout out to BUCO Hardware, Montague Gardens Branch and National, who really came to the party, and assisted us in moving towards one of our long-term dreams, upgrading our Bay Leaf coffee shop. They supplied us with all the materials for a new ceiling, new windows, new bathrooms, and a new fitted kitchen, paint, materials, as well as bringing some of their staff to assist on Mandela Day.

Elsenberg brought some of their students to assist with the field clearing and orchard clearing, West Coast College brought some of their students to assist with painting, and family members and friends assisted with painting and other projects.

We concluded the day with delicious soup and fresh rolls, made by the central kitchen. It was wonderful to look back on the impact we had made.

A huge thank you to all involved! Your donations have really touched us, and we look forward to sharing the final outcome with you.

What is Mandela Day?
Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as Mandela Day, is an international observance in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated annually on his birthday, July 18. The day was officially set by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first observance of Mandela Day held on July 18, 2010.

Nelson Mandela (who was affectionately known as Madiba, hence Madiba Day) was a humanitarian who fought for social justice for 67 years of his life. His hard-working 67 years to make the world a better place are represented by people giving 67 minutes of their time to a good cause on Mandela Day.

Camphill Village Farmers Market
Our August market
by Geornelle de Villiers

Camphill Village is hosting the last market of winter on Sunday 7 August 2022 (spring is on its way!). We are hoping for good weather, but should it rain we will set up inside our hall with sheltered seating on our stoep and under the marquee.

A variety of vendors will be showcasing their beautiful craft work, delicious foods and drinks, plants, jewellery, vintage clothing and sparkling fresh produce amongst many other offerings.

Our Camphill stalls will be overflowing with organic products from our bakery, cosmetics and dairy. The central kitchen offers delicious plates of Sunday lunch and our amazing Group Home leaders bake a variety of cakes to go with coffee from the mobile barista truck.

Take our legendary tractor ride around our beautiful village (looking green and preparing for the spring flowers to bloom) then relax at a table in the shade listening to live music, while the kids find entertainment, colouring, finger painting and climbing in the outdoor play area. Bring along your bicycles and tag along on a guided bike tour through the village.

Bring along friends, family and even your pets (on a leash) and spend the day with us in our beautiful village. We are looking forward to welcoming back familiar faces and to meeting new friends.
So diarise Sunday 7 August as your VERY IMPORTANT Camphill date.

We’re excited to host you, see you on Sunday the 7th!

Open 10h00 to 14h00 at our Community Centre.

Painting and Planting at Camphill entrance
Bless and be blessed
by Carine Human

During Covid many of us started new hobbies, routines, interests and ways to make our situations better in terms of new stressors it brought along. My friend, Sonet, and her daughter started repainting Camphill’s old, faded signage plates. Sonet is a graphic designer and Mekyla is studying fashion design. For them this was a way to stay creative, feel they’re making a difference and use the extra time they had. This evolved into more signage work in and around the village, creating a beautiful art room etc. The beautiful paintwork is done freehand involving massive talent, a lot of time and devotion and usually at their own cost.

This year for Mandela Day, Sonet agreed to assist in revamping our entrance – a beautiful, open canvas to flood with her creativity.

We were joined by Colleen and Lisa and their daughters Franchè (19), Nadia (14), Danika (8), and two of our village daughters, my own Mira (6) and JP (garden manager)’s daughter Annolene (9). The girls gave up their last school holiday day. They joined the residents in the humbling, tiring and thankless task of weeding and cleaning our entrance garden. It is MUCH appreciated!

I would also like to salute Sonet, not as just a volunteer, artist, giver of note, awesome friend and confidante, but as one of the strongest people I know. We hiked the Fish River Canyon a few years ago and I only then discovered (after knowing her for many, many years and being the godmother of her children) that she suffers from fibromyalgia and lives in chronic pain. This never showed. Ever. Then, in February this year she was diagnosed with a massive meningioma - a tumour that arises from the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Though not technically a brain tumour, it is included in this category because it may compress or squeeze the adjacent brain, nerves and vessels. In May this year, she had a craniotomy (surgery to remove the tumour). She has made a remarkable, devout recovery and is very committed to her occupational therapy and speech therapy - nothing is stopping her in living life even more to the full! She actively creates new memories as she has lost a lot over the last 6 years due to the silent growth.

Sonet you are a joy, you spread joy and you remind us that life is short and unpredictable and should be LIVED! A true legend, much like our beloved Madiba.

Doing my 67 minutes for #madibaday at Camphill
by Eunice Visagie – Outsider Communications

Pitching at Camphill West Coast for my 67 minutes for Madiba Day I thought I knew what to expect. I would take photos and videos. I do it every day of my life as a social media content creator for various social media platforms. So, this time the only difference should have been that I did it as a "giving back" rather than "getting back".

Or so I thought. I'm not a big group person. Give me one-on-one, or during big group happenings I will be on the fringe of the action.

At Camphill West Coast I got to be on the fringe of the big happenings. I liked that. I thought I was taking photos and making videos and that is it. Take, edit and send. Right?

Driving home after taking photos and videos of renovations, cleaning, cutting off trees, pulling out weeds, etc. I realised that I was the one who got something on 18 July 2022. I got the opportunity to see perseverance in action, grit and guts despite what life dished up, inner joy when and where happiness might be lacking.

Thank you, Camphill West Coast. I had a blast of a time seeing what your staff does for all its residents, I saw not only smiles but laughs from all involved. I saw joy...

Be the difference before and after 67 minutes
by Masixole Madyungu

The birthday dude (the father of the nation) himself once said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day. While most people celebrate him on one day for 67 minutes, places such as Camphill Village West Coast and other charity organisations celebrate him every day, every hour, every minute.  The essence of Mandela Day - take action, inspire change and give 67 minutes of your time, is a once a year opportunity for those who don't have enough time to lend a hand everyday to those in need. Before TaTa Madiba had his vision of 67 minutes, our national anthem already led us in this direction, "Sounds that call to come together, And united we shall stand…" When we help one another, we creating a better country.

The question is... Is 67 minutes enough?

Of course it’s not, but those 67 minutes represent a critical binding of collective commitment. And acknowledge Mandela's values and dedication to the service of humanity. I strongly believe we shouldn't wait for certain time or period to make a difference in someone else's life through charitable services. Services don’t have to be big or grandiose to be meaningful and make a difference. It is the thought that counts.

Sponsor a Resident
by Janine Strumpher

We have embarked on a drive to find a sponsor for each resident who has no family or financial means. Without Camphill Village they would be on the streets where people with special needs are often victims of abuse and manipulation and at risk even within their own families and/or communities.

And without financial assistance we cannot continue providing this place of safety.

Living at Camphill Village West Coast gives people with intellectual disability the chance to live a full, creative and fulfilled life, to develop their abilities and contribute to their community. The life that we take for granted, is for many a gift. However we can only do this when financial support is found for the individuals.

If you can help, or know of Individuals or Companies we can approach please contact Janine Strumpher on 021 571 8600 or e-mail fundraiser@camphill.org.za
