Make Big Savings by Bus

With Cornwall leading the way in making it easier for people to travel by bus, Transport Minister Baroness Vere MP visited Truro this week, to find out more about Cornwall Council’s bus fares pilot.

Thanks to our previous devolution powers, we're the first first local authority to have such a scheme. Make Big Savings by Bus was launched in April and has significantly cut the cost of bus travel for residents in Cornwall, with fares on average now a third cheaper.

Don't turn off fridges to save money

‘Turning off your fridge won’t save you money’.

This is Cornwall Council’s message following reports some families have been switching off their appliances for short periods to counter rising energy bills.

While this may seem like a money-saving tip, it is actually less economical as fridges end up using more energy to bring the temperature back down once they are switched back on.

Storing food at temperatures above 5°C can also put people at risk of food poisoning as bacteria are allowed to thrive.

You can lower your running costs by:

  • putting your fridge freezer at least 10cm away from the wall to make sure the coils at the back can work properly.
  • making sure the door seals are working so air can’t escape.
  • regularly defrosting the freezer.

Emotional support for children, parents and carers

We're launching a new free programme for any parent or carer who wants to better understand and support their children’s emotions, as well as their own.

The Supporting Parents and Children Emotionally programme, or SPACE, is a collaboration between Together for Families and Headstart Kernow and will offer a mixture of FREE online and face-to-face courses in September.

The programme will give parents and carers the tools they need to understand, support and build resilience, not only in their children, but in themselves.

Parents and carers will learn what is meant by a ‘trauma-informed’ approach, how to identify toxic stress and fight/flight responses, how to manage different emotions, and tools for building resilience.

Face to Face sessions will run from Monday, September 5th and you can book into any of the courses below:

  • Bodmin 5th September – 3rd October
  • Penzance 19th September – 17th October
  • Pool 14th September – 19th October

For those unable to attend the face to face sessions, an online course will take place Via Microsoft Teams from 8th September to 6th October 10am – 11am.
