Upcoming Events

New location for first-Sunday gatherings

Special announcement: The first-Sunday meeting location for the Arizona Outlaws 356 Club has been changed, starting with our next gathering on August 7.

The new monthly meeting place is the Panera Bread and Bakery at 14826 N. Pima Road on the northwest corner of East Raintree Drive and the 101 Freeway in Scottsdale (next to the Bank of America).  Note that this will be the permanent venue (hopefully) for future Outlaws’ first-Sunday meetings.

Yes, this is our third Panera location, and what worked well in the past should be agreeable going forward. Think coffee, breakfast pastry, bagels and other goodies.  Meeting time starts at 7:30 am.

Still hungry?  The Sunday brunch drive will depart at 9:30 led by Tom Reyman, who will escort us to the First Watch restaurant on Shea Blvd. and 92nd Street.

Get out and Drive That 356

Four Corners and Durango event and caravan

Escape the Arizona heat with an epic drive to Durango, Colorado, via Four Corners, a multi-club event being organized by the Arizona Outlaws, New Mexico Zias and Colorado Rocky Mountain clubs.

The event is scheduled for August 25-28, so don’t delay in making plans and reservations. The Hampton Inn in Durango has a block of rooms set aside for the nights of August 25, 26 and 27.  Call the hotel at 970 247-2600 and book under the Porsche 356 group for a discounted rate. Click the REGISTER button below to sign up.

Any questions about the Colorado gathering should be directed to Zia member Garry at gwolf5@comcast.net

Arizona Outlaw Roy Pederson will lead a caravan to the Durango event from the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, meeting up on August 24 at the Shell Station on Shea Boulevard in Fountain Hills.  Departure will be at 10:30 am for a trip to the historic La Posada hotel in Winslow, which is about a 2.5-hour drive.  Make reservations ASAP at La Posada because rooms are limited.

From Winslow, the caravan will drive on August 25 to Chinle for lunch, then off to the Hampton Inn in Durango.  All together, the drive from Winslow should take about 6 hours.

Anyone planning to join the Durango caravan should contact Roy at outlawroy356@icloud.com.

West Coast Holiday in California Wine Country

The West Coast Holiday is back, with the 356 community ready to converge on Paso Robles, California, for the first Porsche 356 Registry holiday held at that location in 37 years.  Registration is now open for the annual event, which takes place September 14-18.  Click here for registration and information.

Events and activities included in the West Coast Holiday are visits to the Estrella Warbirds Museum and the Woodland Auto Collection; a plated dinner at the Cass Winery; a tour of historic California missions; Show and Shine Wine Tasting; cooking classes; and available tours to the Sea Lion Sanctuary and the Hearst Castle.

Hotel registrations need to be made ASAP, we’re told, and while the event hotel is fully booked, there are plenty of other lodgings available in this popular vacation town.

Once again, Roy Pederson is organizing an Outlaws caravan to the holiday.  “Paso Robles is a great spot for such an event,” Roy says.  “The town is surrounded on the west by rolling hills and on east and west with an abundance of wineries.”

Caravan details are still tentative, Roy says, but the plan is for a two-day secondary-road drive leaving Wickenburg at 10 am September 13 with an overnight stop in Victorville, CA.

If you would like to join the Outlaw caravan to Paso Robles, contact Roy at outlawroy356@icloud.com.

Werks Reunion in Monterey

Heading to the Monterey Peninsula this month for the extravaganza of collector car concours, shows, auctions and vintage racing?  Then don't forget one of the key events on the annual Porsche calendar: the Monterey Werks Reunion.

The Porsche-centric event takes place August 19 on the Monterey Pines Golf Course, 1250 Garden Road, Monterey, and features a vast array of models, from our early 356 favorites to the latest in go-fast technology.

The Reunion offers two ways to showcase your precious Porsche, either inside the show on the judged field (although this has likely filled up by now) or in the fairly vast Porsche Corral of parked cars driven to the event.  A bonus for driving your Porsche for Corral display -- free parking.  Everybody else with a "regular" car must pay.

The Porsche Corral, by the way, is typically an awesome collection of lust-worthy cars.  A great show in itself.

For information about the Werks Reunion, presented by the Porsche Club of America, visit the website at https://www.werksreunion.com/monterey.cfm

Drive your 356 Day

Save the date!  The annual Drive Your 356 Day will take place Sunday, September 18, with the group led by Bob Golfen to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior.

Outlaws should pack their own lunches and drinks for a picnic under the trees at this beautiful location.  And be ready to tour the large garden-like collection of cactuses and succulents from around the world.

Further details will be forthcoming in the September edition of the Outlaws newsletter.

Items of Interest

Real 356 Speedster or replica?

You can tell with a casual glance at the interior, according to the PCA website.  Veteran 356 Outlaw members probably know this stuff, but in case you don’t, these are the telltale signs for quickly discerning a genuine vintage Speedster and a replica (assuming that the replica started out as a Volkswagen):

The parking brake – The real 356 has an umbrella-style arrangement under the left side of the dashboard, but the VW-based replica will likely have a pull-up brake handle between the seats.

The pedals – The genuine article has pedals that go directly into the floor, while VWs had pedals mounted sideways to the center tunnel.

The shifter boot – As entry-level cars, Speedsters had small ribbed-rubber boots.  A VW-sourced replica will likely have a larger vinyl or leather boot, which might look nicer but is inaccurate.

Any or all of these signs should let you figure out whether the Speedster is a replica, no matter how nicely done it is.  Plus, it avoids the awkward and disrespectful process of feeling around the wheel wells to determine whether it’s steel or fiberglass.
