With the arrival of monsoon and cooler temperatures in India, July has been a busy month for us at PSD, with a lot of work being done around the country.
After being delayed for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to host a formal launch event for our Community Table Tennis program. We held the second training for Girls Not Brides youth facilitators in Jharkhand. Finally, we are happy to announce that a team of our youth will be participating in the 2023 Street Child Cricket World Cup.
Over 4 days, we hosted various events around Bhubaneswar to officially launch our Community Table Tennis (CTT) program, which has been operational since 2021. Delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the launch events saw over 80 students participate and 10 guests from partner organizations in attendance.
From 21 to 24 July, we held a second training program for member organizations of Girls Not Brides’ (GNB) Jharkhand coalition. 21 youth workers from these organizations were trained on using sport-based activities to tackle gender stereotypes. A final workshop will be held for GNB’s Uttar Pradesh member organizations later this year.
We met with representatives of Street Children United at our Delhi office in early July, discussing our participation in the Street Child Cricket World Cup (SCCWC) 2023, which will take place in India. The SCCWC, which will take place prior to the ICC World Cup, will consist of 22 teams from across the world, made up of street connected children, and create a global platform to help these young voices be heard and their demands realized.
The first cohorts for our short course introducing participants to the basics of sport and development were held on 11 July, in English and Hindi. 9 participants joined the course and learned about how sport can be used to achieve developmental goals. The course, developed in partnership with PRIA and UNESCO New Delhi, is the first of a series of short courses on sport and development - watch out for the others to be launched soon!
