We Have a Beautiful New Mural!

In this month's newsletter, we'll tell you all about the process of getting this new work of art approved and installed, and update you on the upcoming golf scramble fundraiser!
A project more than a year in the making has brought new life to Hilltop Clinic and the Historic Capitol Hill District! Thanks to a $15,000 grant, an Oklahoma City artist was chosen to paint a mural on the side of our building.

It all started when Clarissa, our Director of Outreach & Development, attended a Capitol Hill Civic Group Meeting in February 2021 and heard a City of Oklahoma City employee announce that the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI) was looking for a place to put up a mural in the Capitol Hill area. We had been talking about how much we would like to see a mural on our plain-looking red building, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity! Clarissa sent an email to Shannon Entz with SNI describing how some artwork would help it look less like an old warehouse and more like a fun pediatric clinic, and would be a welcoming sight right on the edge of the Historic Capitol Hill area!

The process of even getting approval for the mural took months. We first had to get written permission from the building owner, Christ Community Church (that waseasy). Then, because of our building's historic significance, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)would not allow the paint to be put directly on the building. SNI suggested something that has been used in this situation in other cities where murals are painted on aluminum panels and then bolted to the building thru the mortar without damaging the brick. SHPO and CCC both approved this method!

Once the mural on aluminum panels was fully approved, it was time to form an art selection committee and choose an artist. Several artists submitted applications, and the art selection committee met via Zoom to narrow it down to three. Then, we met those three artists during a site visit. During the site visit the artists met Hilltop Clinic employees, neighbors in the community, and SNI staff. We all discussed what we would like to see in the mural and how it could reflect the community. The three artists then had about two weeks to come up with their mural ideas and present them to the art selection committee.

The artist selected was Lucinda Jones! Lucinda began had the aluminum panels installed in May, then began painting immediately after and finished this month! Here are some photos of her progress.
The artist was sure to include a pediatrician and his patient, highlight education and The Boys and Girls Club as they have purchased the building next door, and show the beauty and vibrance of the community. She also honors long-time activist Mary Sosa.

“Mary was a huge community advocate she did many years of service, she worked in Oklahoma City for many, many years. She also gave back; she started her neighborhood association she really put us on the map in that way,” said Miriam Campos of Calle Dos Cinco.

The artist said, "My goal was to create a beautiful and uplifting mural to honor the community, their culture, their history, and the future growth for the Capitol Hill community." She also said in a recent Facebook post, "Working on this mural was a amazing experience from start to end. I received joyful reaction from the community! Hope to continue to paint uplifting murals throughout the OKC."
