It's hard work being a person. You have to do it every single day.

- Carol Shields (hat tip to Kathe Lieber for this quote)

In Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good, the 12th book in Jan Karon’s Mitford Series, Father Tim Kavanagh says there is one prayer God always answer with a yes: Thy will be done.

He adds this caveat when asked if that's it: “One must pray it with a surrendered heart.”

After praying for his parishioner, who is unable to pray herself because of her doubts, he adds: “When I speak God’s will, it helps to know that he wants the best for us. If you can’t believe he’s there, pray anyway. If you feel he’s cheap and withholding, thank him anyway. There will come a time when you’ll thank him even for the hard places.”

Some of us struggle with doubt, which can keep us from trusting in God’s will.* Others are so confident and determined to do great things that we may forget that God’s will is supreme. Either way, we believe we know better than He does. It takes a lot of courage and humility to trust that He not only knows what’s best, that He not only is able to do what’s best, but also that He is willing to do what’s best. Why? Because He loves us. . .

“Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, Your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O LORD. How precious is Your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of Your wings” (Psalm 36:5-7).

Zephaniah 3:17 is one of my favourite Bible verses, and one I've committed to memorizing and meditating on this month: “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

I urge you to meditate on these four powerful words—Thy will be done—this week. This beautiful song from Hillary Scott may help.
Have a great Monday!

Design
I've never seen anything like this before and wish we had one in Montreal. The 2D Restaurant in Chicago has been painstakingly (the job took two years to complete) painted all in white, from top to bottom, and then "illustrated" with black lines so that the entire establishment has the look of a two-dimensional comic strip. It must be a bit of a trip to walk in and find your bearings but, wow, what a creative way to give your customers a unique experience. It's quirky and clever and simply beautiful all at the same time!

Inspiration
This Sunday, August 7, will mark 40 years since baseball player Jim Rice saved a little boy's life at Fenway Park. I hadn't heard this story before but a friend recently posted about it on Facebook and it intrigued me so I looked it up. I was glad to find this article detailing what happened.

Movie
On Saturday evening I went out with a couple of cousins to see Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (based on the 1958 novel by Paul Gallico, which was first made into a film starring Angela Lansbury and Omar Sharif in 1992). I thought it was delightful and fresh. It's the story of an ordinary older woman, a widow in London who cleans houses to support herself, who manages to fulfill her dream to travel to Paris and visit the House of Dior. She wants to buy a spectacular dress custom made by the great fashion designer. But things don't go quite the way she had dreamed. I highly recommend this film, in select theatres right now.

Recipe

Yesterday, my parents and I went out for lunch with a couple from church. While waiting for our meals, at a restaurant across the street from the world-famous St-Viateur Bagel, I mentioned that I'd tried making bagel chips some weeks ago. That led to a conversation about how simple (and delicious!) homemade pita chips are. When I went grocery shopping a couple of hours later, I picked up an extra bag of pita bread and then baked a big batch of pita chips. (My excuse is that a friend was coming over in the evening and I needed snacks.) Anyway, they were delicious (and are all gone by now). Here's the recipe I followed, if you want to try making some. My only suggestion is to bake the pita a little longer than suggested, especially if the pita is really fresh and soft.
