SHYC Commodores Post - End of July News

Dear SHYC Members,

The last weekend of July is here and August greets us Monday.  Below you will find details on what is happening for the next two weekends, July 30/31 and August 6/7, along with some exciting updates from our SHYC Junior Race Teams - results from local, national, and world champs!  I hope to see everyone down at the club in the coming days and weeks.

This weekend on Sunday July 31st is the annual SHYC Parent Child Tennis Tournament.  If you and your child would like to play, please contact Head Pro Steve at stevegodiksen@yahoo.com.  Green Ball is at noon and Yellow Ball is at 1pm, come cheer on the players!  Note - the courts will not be available for general member usage on Sunday until after 4pm.

  • August 13th - Coastal Classic PHRF Regatta - SHYC hosts an annual ECSA PHRF Regatta which attracts 50+ boats from all over CT.  Register to race or offer your time to help with RC, marks, or the Race Party!  Questions, contact Thad Ozyck at thadozyck@gmail.com.  Register online at Coastal Classic Yacht Scoring.

Upcoming Social Events, Galley, and Launch Service:

  • SHYC Galley is Open Daily & Weekend Specials.  11:00am to 4:00pm (grill & hot food served until 3pm). Weekend lunch specials will be offered every Sat & Sun. Visit the Galley Specials Link on the SHYC Website (updated each week on Friday for the weekend).

  • Family Fun Night - Encanto (August 6th at 6pm) - invites from Greenvelope, check your email! Join us for the magic of the Encanto! Bring the whole family and wear bright colors, enjoy kid‐friendly Columbian food, make a beautiful flower, and get excited for the Encanto sing‐along dance party.  
  • Adult Learn to Sail Night (Friday August 19th) - Followed by Cocktails on the deck - Reach out to Fleet Captain Dan Fisher (ddustinfisher@gmail.com)
  • Daily Launch Service - 8AM to Sunset. Note, from one hour on either side of Low Tide, the Launch is not able to service the way back of the harbor or the association dock.

SHYC Junior Racers - Great Results at Nationals & World Champs!

Ike Schutz & Avery Peterson at the 2022 FEVA World Championships - Gold Fleet Results!  Ike & Avery just returned from an amazing experience at the FEVA World Championships held at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. They placed 28th in Gold Fleet, out of 186 FEVA teams from over 20 countries around the world!  Ike & Avery were the only sailors from the USA at this event.  The racing was held in a variety of conditions, including three days with winds over 20 knots! An experience of a lifetime, with new friends from all around the World.  Full Results 
  

Wylder Smith continues to dominate in Optimists!  Wylder Smith took 3rd place out of 150 boats at the highly competitive US National Optimist Championship held in Cascade Locks, Oregon at the famous sailing location “The Gorge." He won five of the races! Next he is heading to Canada for CORK, then the New England Championship in Newport, RI, followed by the US Optimist Team Racing Championship in Norfolk, VA. In the Fall he heads back to Europe for more international racing. Results of the Opti US Nationals.
  


Gus Fichtenholtz at the Laser Nationals. Gus Fichtenholtz competed in the radial class at ILCA Nationals in Brant Beach, NJ. There were 250 boats competing. Gus finished 126 out of the 150 competitors in the radial class. Sailing well in his first full national level event. While there he was coached by Ryan Squires, one of our former SHYC race coaches.

Our Junior Programs are in fully swing and the kids are entering into their last Session of programming next week!  Thank you to our amazing sailing, swimming, and tennis programs for all the fantastic coaching.  Please check out the July SHYC Junior Programs Newsletter to read all the news about classes and racing results of our JR SHYC RACE TEAM!  We are also looking for end of summer slideshow pictures. SHYC JR Sailors at Cedar Point JR Race Week & Madison Beach Club - Top Results!
Cedar Point Race Week: SHYC Junior Race Team had great success at the Cedar Point Race Week last week. Fischer Smith & Ben Brown won the FEVA fleet, followed by Carter Mikolay & Sasha Fichtenholtz in 3rd place, out of 20 Fevas. Gus Fichtenholtz sailed to 5th place in a very competitive Laser Radial fleet of 47 boats (overccoming a broken mast on day 1).  View the Full Results on Club Spot.

Madison Beach Club JR Regatta: The whole SHYC race team was together at MBC competing in the FEVA and Opti Green Fleets. Fischer Smith & Ben Brown won the Feva fleet with Carter Mikolay & Sasha Fichtenholtz coming in second. In Green Fleet Optis, the team sailed well with David Fanterella, Teag Ozyck, and Chase Gunningsmith at the front of the fleet for most of the races!  Thank you to all the coaches!

Breakwater Update - PROGRESS! The new rocks for the breakwater are here and being placed daily. For your safety and the safety of your children, we ask that everyone continue to stay clear of the repair materials, workers, work vessels, and associated machinery/equipment. Thank you for your patience.  

Join the SHYC Kayak Fleet for Full Moon Paddling & Potluck Dinner:  SHYC has an active Kayaking Fleet and special Kayaking events. Join us for our popular Full Moon Kayaking & Pot Luck Dinners. Please bring your favorite dish to share.
