PLEDGE INCOME NOT KEEPING UP WITH EXPENSES!
If you have already pledged to UUYO for this year, then please double check your records to make sure you are up-to-date. You can contact the office at office@uuyo.org to confirm your commitment and your payments to date.
We are running a deficit every month at this time, which is not tenable. If you are not already a pledger and are willing to make a commitment of any size, please let us know and someone from the Stewardship team will contact you.
UUYO is a remarkable faith community well worth supporting, and it doesn’t happen without your support!

Peace in the City
Lao Tzu writes: "If there is to be peace in the cities, There must be peace between neighbors. If there is to be peace between neighbors, There must be peace in the home. If there is to be peace in the home, There must be peace in the heart.” How do we cultivate peace in the here and now for the benefit of ourselves, our neighbors, our city?

Death Cafe
Sunday, August 7th
12:15 pm - 1:30 pm
Schweitzer Lounge and on Zoom
We’ve all pondered over life’s big questions - where did we come from, why are we here, where are we going…. What better place to do this than within our UU community!
Our first Death Cafe, held in 2015, was enthusiastically appreciated for its simple format and meaningful discussions.
Join us for a safe and respectful opportunity to discuss our feelings and ideas about death. We will gather in small groups, both on Zoom and in the church building to share an open and straight-forward confidential conversation of our thoughts and hopes.
The Death Cafe is open to all adults. Walk-ins and Zoom-ins are welcome!
If you’d like more information and history of the program visit www.DeathCafe.com

Stop The Violence Prayer Walk
Sunday August 7th, 1:30 pm
Crandall Park
Clergy and Community Leaders of Greater Youngstown Against the Violence will be holding our next “Stop the Violence” Prayer Walk on Sunday, August 7, at 2:00 p.m. We will be gathering at Crandall Park on the city’s north side, 400 Redondo Rd., Youngstown, Ohio, at 1:30 p.m. and proceed to the prayer walk around the park. Crandall Park was the location of one of the homicides this year. We will be praying for peace for our city and against the violence that has infected our neighborhoods. For those who would like to participate but cannot do the walk, we will have simultaneous prayer in the gathering area. In the event of rain, we will gather inside the Metropolitan Baptist Church, 485 Redondo Rd. for the prayers.

You and I probably didn’t want to join it, but somehow we got admitted without application.
In many ways, you also may feel a continuity of personhood, in other ways— well, things just feel different. You are navigating uncharted waters towards destinations unknown. This summer and fall, we will be piloting various opportunities to connect to discuss personal issues that arise as we exceed our biblically allotted three score years and ten.

Coming Up at UUYO
Sunday Service 11 am
August 14th, 2022
Imagine Peace
This simple phrase is now part of the cultural lexicon due to John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In the aftermath of the Vietnam war, many in the world were daring to "Imagine Peace." Were they just dreamers, or perhaps they're not the only one? Join us as we Imagine Peace in 2022, the kind of imagining that leads to vision and action.
What does it mean to belong, and what prevents us and encourages us in feeling that sense of belonging? Please join us in person and virtually on zoom to discuss and plan September's worship around the theme of "Belonging."
Join us after the brief conversation after service on Sunday, August 21st to get to know UUYO better.
Recent visitors are invited to join members of the Newcomers’ Involvement Team to consider how we found our ways to UUYO and how we can deepen our connections.
We will be meeting in Schweitzer Lounge after service ends. To join via Zoom, just stay in the Zoom session after Service.
Announcements
Equal Exchange Coffee News
No surprise here: prices are up. Some time ago our coffee supplier, Equal Exchange, announced the need to increase prices. We did not increase prices at UUYO right away, as we had inventory, and I took advantage of a couple of sales. But now we must get in line to help small farmers across the commodity food world. Remember, no matter how much price increases hurt, they always hurt the poor populations more. The farmers who grow the coffee, cocoa beans, and tea which enhance our lives, are among that population.
Consequently, beginning August 1, there will be a $1.00 increase in the price of packages of coffee: Regular coffees will be $9.00 and Decaf $10.00. Other items will be adjusted as we add inventory.
There is still time to pick up your favorite beverage or chocolate bar at the old price!
Remember also that the church supplies coffee for everyone at Coffee Hour. Enjoy, but think about it when you make your pledge to UUYO this fall. And coffee makers in the kitchen, be reasonable when you make pots of coffee; check the attendance, and consider making an additional Airpot, only if needed.
Thanks.
Ellen Satre, for the Equal Exchange Project
Give Away The Plate
Our August Give Away the Plate Organization is Thrive Mahoning Valley : https://thrivemv.org/ .
Thrive Mahoning Valley works to create a more welcoming and equitable community while striving to connect new and current residents to economic, social, and educational opportunities. Their vision is for the Mahoning Valley to be recognized as a community that is welcoming to all. By cultivating a culture of inclusion & equity, and setting the table for regional economic growth, we can bring together the communities of the Mahoning Valley to Thrive for generations to come.
One of their first initiatives was to create a Community ResourceGuide, which was a collaborative project to support families relocating to the Mahoning Valley from Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricanes Maria and Irma. Since then, Thrive Mahoning Valley has partnered with Lit Youngstown and the Center for Working Class Studies to develop the "Dear Mahoning Valley" story-collection project. The project allows residents who moved to, or through the Valley from elsewhere to submit their stories to be featured so that their voices can be amplified through any medium of their choosing
Thrive Mahoning Valley's ongoing efforts is working with partners to celebrate Welcoming Week. Through Welcoming Week, organizations and communities bring together immigrants, refugees, and long-time residents to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity. UUYO has partnered in the past with Thrive Mahoning Valley during Welcome Week (the first week in September) in 2019. This year, Thrive Mahoning Valley will be organizing exciting events during Welcoming Week, which is September 9-18.

Online Giving
It is now easier to donate online through the church website – there is a “GIVE ONLINE to UUYO” link at the top of the home page that provides options for donating to several funds, including Give Away the Plate. If you want to use a phone app to give you can download VANCO’s GivePlus app from the Apple App Store or from Google Play.
Both methods give you the option of making a single donation or setting up a recurring gift to UUYO
Another Way to Give to UUYO
An online service from Huntington Bank (formerly TCF Bank) allows you to make an online deposit directly into the UUYO account by check or credit card from this link:
Once you provide your name and email you can include a message in the form letting us know how you want your contribution to be used at UUYO.
Enter the information requested for the type of payment you choose and click the Send Payment button. You and UUYO will receive email confirmation of your donation.
Our Mission is to build a diverse and transformative spiritual community, help people live lives of wholeness, and promote justice, peace, and religious freedom.
