Catch one of our late summer trips
We have some really special trips and events to take us through late summer, including one new event and one to be rearranged, so be sure to book your place early. We’ve also got a report on our successful Summer Show.
Coach trip to RHS Rosemoor Flower Show, Saturday 20th August
Specialist growers, horticultural experts and artisans descend on Rosemoor to share their passion for plants and all things gardening. Enjoy the floral displays, demonstrations and talks, with live music. Food and drink to buy from food outlets, or pre-order a picnic bag. Cost £19 per person, guests £22. Depart Uplyme Village Hall at 9am.
To book please contact Jenny Harding, jennyhlyme@hotmail.co.uk 07773 604137.
Shared cars trip to Bee Nice Blooms, Thursday 1st and Thursday 8th September
Visit this ‘no dig’ flower farm at Abbotsbury in our shared cars to arrive for 10.30am. Owner Sam Wood will talk about how they grow, harvest, condition and market their flowers. Limited spaces. Cost £30 per person includes tea/coffee and cake. Guests are welcome for an additional £3. Joining / payment instructions and help to find others to share cars will be provided after booking.
To book please contact Tricia Boyd, tricia@thegardenersblacksmith.co.uk 07767 261444.
REARRANGED TRIP – Wednesday 14th September.
Owing to circumstances beyond our control, the trip to Hauser & Wirth at Bruton on Wednesday September 14th will no longer take place. We are currently working on finding a substitute trip for the same date and will advise members as soon as possible.
NEW - Wild Food Walk, Uplyme, Wednesday 21st September, 9am
Harriet Mansell, chef at Michelin Guide-listed Robin Wylde in Lyme Regis, will be guiding us on a short walk in Uplyme to look at wild edibles. This observational walk will help us connect with the nature around us and understand the principles and dangers of foraging.
There are 12 places, restricted to members only. Cost £5. To book please contact Tricia Boyd, tricia@thegardenersblacksmith.co.uk 07767 261444, who will provide joining details after booking.
Successful Summer Flower and Produce Fair

Fantastic sunny weather set the tone for our 2022 Summer Flower and Produce Fair, which returned to its pre-Covid vibrancy. The marquee was bursting with flowers and produce, and thronged with visitors all afternoon admiring the skills of our entrants.
The village hall displayed some fine crafts and the refreshments proved as popular as ever, with cream teas selling out. Helpers in the kitchen ranged from ages 12 to 86 and included students from Woodroffe School as well as society members.
Competition classes attracted 674 entries from over 80 entrants, a level that was up from the last ‘full’ show year in 2019. It was great to see the high level of entries from children this year: 45 calendulas grown from seed and 110 original poems on this year’s show theme of trees. The Best Quality award of the ever-popular ‘potato in a bucket’ competition was also won by a junior this year, entrant Seth Buller. Prizes were presented by our President, Rose Mock.
Vice-chair of the society and show committee organiser, Fiona Walker, said: “We gave our visitors a brilliant day out: the marquee looked amazing, the hall was buzzing and the field was bustling with visitors. Behind the scenes, all our judges, stewards, volunteers and committee members made the show a real success. We’re now looking forward to our informal autumn show on Saturday October 8th and hoping for plenty of entries with autumn produce.”
