Welcome to a new month, and a new way of sharing the origin stories of the Makers & Kreators in our one-of-a-kindness collective. We are celebrating the women & enterprises we work with a new set of icons.
As part of our 2022 Vision: Two kind, we committed to listening and learning. And with an aim for doing business better, we have collaborated with Tiwi designer, Clair Helen to create a set of icons that represent our Makers & Kreators so our community can connect and discover the story behind each gift. These icons help you identify where something was made and who by, so you can choose how to best invest. We invite you to discover more about the meanings here.
For corporate & community groups keen to Learn the Art of Weaving we have all new offerings from artisans across the tropical north in Darwin + Daintree, please visit our refreshed webpage here.
Last month we visited several schools and took part in community events in support of NAIDOC celebrations, we are grateful for the heartfelt invitations we received and are honoured to continue our investment in the next generation. A special event for us was hosting our Lighting the Way workshops, led by Ocean Rose x ReTelling Country and we put together this story to share the highlights.
As always, we welcome your ideas on how we can do business better and we invite you to reach out via email: karina@starwin.com.au and share your story.
We are excited that as part of our 2022 Vision: Two Kind we have been able to collaborate to grow our career pathways & youth leadership initiatives. New in 22, we have teamed up with the CareerTrackers Indigenous Internship Program and offer in a Territory first, a work experience placement for their High School programs. A big thank you to Ann-Maree Long for her dedication in making this happen!
On July 20 & 21 we hosted seventeen year-old Djamarlia at our Darwin store, where she spent time connecting and creating. Discover her story and what the experience meant here.
This week we farewelled Sharniqua back to Sydney after spending the past month or so with us whilst on her mid-semester break from university.
During this time, amongst her wedding, honeymoon, her birthday and other personal commitments, Niqua has invested in growing her own small enterprise, ReTelling Country.
As part of our commitment to supporting community events and NAIDOC celebrations on Larrakia Country, Niqua led a number of events, focused on investing in the next generation. This included; hosting weaving circles at Manunda Terrace Primary School and Darwin High School as part of their student & family celebrations.
We are grateful for her time spent co-designing and coordinating with Ocean Rose NT to host two x Lighting the Way candlemaking sessions as part of our initiative backed by Youth NT.
Sharniqua also spent time in store, training and mentoring our new team members, and during this time, she was also able to finalise the completion of her NXT Generation placement as part of the Arts NT program, and do a film shoot for their multi-media presentation. A huge effort as most of this placement had to be completed remotely!
Wishing Niqua all the best for Semester Two at UTS in Sydney as she furthers her study in Fashion & Design. We are excited to see what she creates next with RTC.
"Monday's NAIDOC event was fantastic and in relation to the weaving activities it attracted many of our DHS students. It was set up under a tree with a beautiful blanket, it was very relaxing and educational for the students. We would love to thank Sharniqua for her efforts and contribution to the weaving activities, it was performed beautifully."
