  • Thank you to Jaiyden for doing all the behind the scenes work to make the staff meeting possible, including mastering the use of the new screen!
  • Thank you to the Pre-primary teachers who participated in the Let’s Decode professional learning last week. Good luck practising your clapping whilst segmenting!
  • Well done to Ms Eaton and Room 35 for a great assembly item on Friday.
  • Thank you to Brett for his continued involvement in keeping us up-to-date with Union matters
  • Well done to Bree’s Melbourne Demons who had a win in the wet on Friday night. Commiserations to the Dockers supporters on staff, it may be a long week for you with Bree around!
  • A continued thank you to all staff for their flexibility in covering and accepting constant changes when we have staff shortages, leave and relief challenges.
  • Thank you to the EA team at kindy who keep us all safe and report any OHS issues without a second thought. Eagle eyes that follow through in assisting to keep a well used- well worn facility up to date and mitigating any risk - great team effort at our off site.
  • 'Smart Plan' - last Tuesday we were down a kindy teacher.  Cindy agreed without hesitation to assist and take the Kindy class initially suspending the music program.  But then organised Hubby to take Music.  Thank you, Cindy your support and flexibility is greatly appreciated during, these challenging times sourcing relief!!
  • 'Greek Girls' (Not Perisse!!). Thank you, Michelle and Estelle, for brightening up everyone's day by providing an array of delicious Greek food for morning tea.
  • Emerson incident - This poor fella seriously injured himself while running and was pretty traumatic to see. So many people just chipped into support. Thank you Anita for your care and managing so well. Kylie for helping to calm him. Anne for your super first aid work. Sue for taking two phys ed classes to cover Anita. Front office for running around conveying messages and delivering bags. Julie waiting at gates for ambulance. The Aunty May team for covering Kylie's class and checking in on Kylie.  You are all champions!
  • Congratulations to Deb Perry for the birth of her granddaughter Amarnie over the weekend!

PRINCIPALS PEN

I was so pleased to learn that (at most recent count) 21 staff have put their hands up to attend the ECU short course, The Science of reading: Translating research to classroom practice. This demonstrated three things to me. First, as educators we have been starved of opportunities for professional learning in recent times and we are keen to participate in furthering our knowledge and skills again through attending high quality professional learning opportunities. Second, that the application of research to practice is gaining momentum at an incredibly fast rate. And third, that Mount Hawthorn PS is full of dedicated hard-working teachers who are willing to go above and beyond to help them get the best outcomes for the most important people in our school: our students.

A couple of shares from me this week: The first is one that simply must be in every teacher’s toolkit because it is chock full of practical applications and demonstrations of how teachers are implementing research into their literacy activities: The Reading Science in Schools page on Facebook. I remember in August 2019 when this group sprouted out as an offshoot of a WA based ECE page that wasn’t necessarily aligned with evidence-based practice. Within five days it had 600 members which at the time was incredible. Fast forward 3 years and the membership is now 48.5k.

The other is longer and heavier, but the seminal piece of work on teaching reading in the last 15 years: Kerry Hempenstall’s Read About It: Scientific Evidence for the Effective Teaching of Reading (2016). How children learn to read is one of the most studied aspects of education, and this report outlines the powerful research evidence on learning to read from the 1960s to 2015 and explains how having effective, evidence-based reading instruction in every classroom, every day can substantially improve literacy levels among Australian children.

Have a great week, everyone!

Junior Year 1 and 2 Athletics Carnival & Wednesday Timetable

Due to the unfavourable weather conditions this week, we have made the decision to reschedule the Year 1 & 2 Faction Athletics Carnival to next Wednesday, 10 August 2022 (weather permitting). Next week, the carnival will be in the same location and follow the same run schedule, with a coffee van confirmed for the new date. We apologise for any inconveniences this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

This means this week is business as usual, however, please see the amended timetable below. I will also post in staffroom as I will be utilising the booked relief (Mike Slee) to release our 4 teachers who are participating in the Shaping Minds in class demonstrations on Wednesday morning!

Wed Week 3 Term 3

War on Waste

We have noticed and received reports from cleaners etc that there is a great deal of rubbish around. We are actioning some more bins and trying to locate them further around the grounds for greater access, but can we please ask all duty teachers to raise this vigilance- restricting the release of the students before a high standard of cleanliness is achieved should raise the motivation. There are dust pans available to the students in the undercover area to utilise- even if eating in an alternative area. Responsibility for our own ‘mess’, caring for our environment and doing our best are all school virtues - we may need to amplify this message this week and beyond!

EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS (HOT / WET)

The wet and wild weather is still forecast over the week and there will likely be the need to use the Extreme Weather Procedure for these times - If you need to revisit and familiarise again please see updated version here.

*All classes have a buddy class or admin member to assist with half supervision required as all students when in the classroom need supervision.

Thank you - Lorena
