Prof Louise Baur, President of World Obesity Federation (2022-2024)
Congratulations to CRE EPOCH-Translate director, Prof Louise Baur, on being elected as President of World Obesity Federation. The World Obesity Federation, an international NGO headquartered in London, is the only global organisation focused exclusively on obesity. World Obesity is a lead partner to global agencies on obesity, including the World Health Organization. Louise has been a leading voice in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. Under her leadership, CRE EPOCH-Translate aims to implement and scale up effective interventions to prevent obesity in the first few years of life.

EPOCH-Connect: a new community of practice for researchers in early prevention of childhood obesity
The new community of practice is established to strengthen inter-disciplinary research capacities and enhance research impact on early prevention of obesity in children. The community is open to any early and mid-career researchers from diverse disciplines who are conducting research in the early prevention of childhood obesity or health promotion in the early years (0-5 years). Health Research Board Emerging Investigator Award
CRE EPOCH-Translate Associate Investigator, Dr Karen Matvienko-Sikar, based in Ireland was recently awarded a Health Research Board Emerging Investigator Award to the value of €791,130 for her project “A Standardised Approach to Measuring Infant Feeding Outcomes to Prevent Childhood Obesity”. The project will build on Karen’s previous development of a core outcome set for infant feeding interventions to prevent childhood obesity by developing a toolkit of measurement instruments (e.g. questionnaires, clinical assessments) to better evaluate infant-feeding interventions and prevent childhood obesity. This will enhance the evaluation of interventions to prevent childhood obesity, with potential for significant impact on, and meaningful improvements for, population health. The project team also includes CRE-EPOCH Translate members, Prof Rebecca Golley, Dr Vicki Brown, and Prof Helen Skouteris. Read more.

New staff – Dr Thomas Lung
CRE EPOCH-Translate welcomes Dr Thomas Lung as a research fellow to stream 2. Thomas is a health economist with a wealth of experience in building and using health economic models to evaluate long-term health outcomes and reduce costs to the health system of chronic disease prevention. Notably, he contributed to the development of the EPOCH model and has supervised two PhD students in the economics of obesity in childhood. Tom completed his PhD in 2015 and his previous role was leading the modelling and evaluation group at the George Institute for Global Health. He will join Vicki Brown, Alison Hayes and Michelle Tran in stream 2, and will be based at the University of Sydney. Read more

Knowledge Translation in Action: Research and case studies from prevention research

The National Centre of Implementation Science is hosting a webinar presenting research and case studies exploring the use of knowledge translation strategies and associations with policy and practice impacts on preventive health. Stream 1 co-lead, Prof Rebecca Golley, will present case studies from two national projects: VegKIT, tools and resources to increase children’s vegetable intake, and EPOCH – short tools to monitor healthy habits in the first 5 years of life. Other speakers include Maddie Heenan and Alex Chung on the development of a knowledge synthesis approach to help address the evidence-action gap for decision makers in chronic disease prevention.
