An introduction to honour RuPaul – hello, hello, hello!

It’s nice to virtually make your acquaintance! I’m Jake, and I’m the newly appointed Event and Venue Hire Coordinator here at ATYP! I always knew I’d make it to the big time somehow, and here I am, in proper digital fashion. I’m a writer and director living out in the Western Suburbs, and I have a keen interest in queer themes, stories of our people out West, horror (I know, spooky dooky) – and most importantly – the voices and stories of our young creatives. There are so many vibrant stories to amplify, and that’s what drove me to ATYP.

It’s an exciting time to be in Walsh Bay lately, with The Rebel Theatre - and our wonderful shared foyer - becoming the social hub for our FUSE 2022 Youth Arts Summit! A three-day event with dynamic leaders in art, coming together as one.

Auditions will be in full swing for Shack, a beautifully written play by our very own playwright superstar, George Kemp!

All the very best,

Jake

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE UPDATE

ATYP regrets to announce we are postponing A Clockwork Orange: A Play with Music. This difficult decision has been made following the ongoing financial impact of COVID on the delivery of the 2022 season.

Despite the creative successes of ATYP's productions The Deb and M.Rock, the financial risk in staging major productions in this environment is overwhelming. At present every ATYP program has experienced a period of closure, change of personnel and/or the urgent recruitment of additional personnel as well as high levels of audience cancellations due to illness.

The financial impact is further exacerbated by the defunding of ATYP by the federal government’s arts investment and advisory body, The Australia Council.

To support the artists and creative team of A Clockwork Orange, ATYP is conducting a two-week creative development in August which will culminate in a work-in-development showing.

The staff and Board of ATYP deeply regret being forced to make this decision and the company remains committed to this production and the extraordinary artists that will bring it to the stage.

ATYP’s ongoing financial security is now a priority.

If you are concerned about the impact federal funding cuts are having on ATYP and the Arts more broadly, you can have your say by making a submission to the National Cultural Policy by 22 August.

PAST THE SHALLOWS

Based on Favel Parrett's award-winning debut novel and adapted by playwright Julian Larnach, Past the Shallows explores brotherhood in a heart-wrenching, lyrical exploration of morality, family secrets, and the capacity for both brutality and tenderness within contemporary masculinity.

In this co-production with Archipelago Productions, acclaimed director Ben Winspear directs a powerhouse cast of three young actors playing multiple roles across seasons in Hobart and Sydney. Keep your eyes peeled on our socials to meet the cast!

Let yourself be swept away by the tide of this compelling and deeply poignant story that is the perfect closing piece in our 2022 season.

Season dates:
Hobart 14 - 24 September
Sydney 12 October - 6 November

INTERSECTION FESTIVAL

On Tuesday, 8 ensembles from drama groups and schools around NSW came together to perform at Intersection Festival 2022 in The Rebel Theatre. Each group performed a 10-minute script that was created by emerging writers at our 2021 National Studio program for the Intersection: Bloom publication.

A huge thank you to each of the ensembles that performed, we are incredibly proud of the talent that was witnessed upon our stage and can't wait to see what you all do next. Another huge thank you to everyone who attended on Tuesday - we are incredibly overwhelmed with all the support we have received for this Festival and can’t wait to see you back next year for Intersection Festival 2023.

CULTIVATE

ATYP is delighted to introduce our new professional development program for emerging First Nations or PoC dramaturgs. CULTIVATE will provide participants with skills development and industry connections.

Four emerging dramaturgs will be selected to be part of this in-person program, from September 2022 for 12 months. Over the course of the program, the participants will be mentored by ATYP Resident Dramaturg Jane FitzGerald and Dramaturg, Director, Writer and Creative Producer Bernadette Fam. Participants will attend regular monthly meetings with the mentors to develop their craft and skills, and to build their theatre community.

If you have any questions about any aspect of the program please address an email to either Bernadette or Jane at hello@atyp.com.au and we can arrange a time to chat.

YOUTH ARTS SUMMIT

Last week national youth performing arts leaders and stakeholders came together as a community in our home on Pier 2/3.  Friends old and new met during our Global Cafe session to unpack burning issues and bring forward unique perspectives, intersecting goals, and creating plans for creative initiatives, collaborations and advocacy. We heard from a variety of speakers and delegates about the issues facing companies and the sector as a whole, and how some have found alternative solutions to the funding crisis in youth arts.

We are thankful to everyone that attended the summit and gave us their perspective on youth performing arts. A huge thank you goes to our speakers who flew in from all around Australia to facilitate the discussion on key issues in our sector and how advocacy can aid in reducing the funding crisis being experienced by so many in our industry.

SHACK

As part of our Young Industry Studio Program, young performers aged 10-13 are invited to audition for our upcoming production of Shack! Shack was written by George Kemp, winner of our 2020 Foundation Commission.

Students will audition for roles, attend rehearsals, and work with the director, writer and a whole creative team to bring the world premiere of Shack to life with a performance week in The Rebel Theatre.

Entry into this class is via Audition Only and commitment to every class is vital. Auditions are being held on the 7th, 9th, and 10th of August.
