Incredible top five lock-out for JC Raceteknik in home Nitro RX round

Swedish team JC Raceteknik claimed an incredible result in the second round of the Nitro Rallycross Championship at Strangnas in Sweden, as the team locked out the top five positions in the headline Group E category for all-electric FC1-X machines.

Running within the amalgamated Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and JC Raceteknik team, under the Monster Energy RX Cartel DRR JC banner on the significantly-revised historic Swedish circuit, Norwegian star Andreas Bakkerud and Nitro RX round one winner Robin Larsson stormed through the final to secure a second consecutive 1-2 finish.

Bakkerud was among the front-running pace throughout the weekend, then made the best start in the final to lead throughout and claim a maiden Nitro RX win. Larsson meanwhile had to battle through the second phase of the weekend, following broken steering in the opening heat race. He fought back by winning the semi-final from low down on the grid, then climbed to second in the final to chase Bakkerud for the majority of the race and finish a close second.

Joel Christoffersson, JC Raceteknik Team Principal:

“It’s been a fantastic weekend here in Strangnas with a 1,2,3,4,5. I almost cannot believe it - it’s a really great achievement for the team, and a big achievement for the drivers. It’s nice to see how we have got the cars going, and a setup that is working well. We had some bad luck in some races, but overall it’s been a great weekend and I’m glad to see Andreas on the top step of the podium. The feeling is very good and now we look to ahead to the next races in America.”

Andreas Bakkerud (NOR), Group E:

“It’s insane the effort that JC is putting into this Nitro Rallycross programme, with eight cars on the grid this weekend. Before the weekend I was a bit sceptical, especially having five of those cars in Group E. I thought it was too much but at the end finishing 1,2,3,4,5 with me as the winner – I couldn’t be more proud of the whole gang. I know many of the mechanics and I know every car has a top team to win and that’s a huge effort. It’s cool for me to finally win the big hardware. I’ve done a few races in Nitro Rallycross and taken a third, second and now a first. For me and Robin now in the championship, we'e very equal, it’s a mega job. We stayed away from trouble, and that was a key for this great result.”

Robin Larsson (SWE), Group E:

“We had a really good weekend again, this time Andreas took the P1 with me in P2. The result is pretty incredible for the team. Things looked pretty dark for me after the first heat on Sunday morning where I got a small hit in the front wheel. I started way back in the semi-final, I didn’t have much expectation but after two corners I was in P1 and it felt really good. I controlled the race from there. In the final I also got a good start. I hunted Andreas for the first two or three laps but the lap I went into the joker I made a mistake and he did a perfect lap. That is what it is, it’s really small margins, but it’s been a really good weekend.”

Four-time World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristoffersson drove the Nitro RX ‘Star Car’ for the Strangnas weekend and quickly got up to speed in his very first time driving the FC1-X. Working on the setup of the all-new machine, thanks to the support of the other drivers in the team with greater experience in the concept, Kristoffersson won his heat race on Sunday morning, but was handed a penalty that ultimately meant he needed to progress to the final via the LCQ. In the final he made an incredible start from the back row of the grid, drove around the outside of the pack to climb into podium contention and eventually finish third.

Jamaican Fraser McConnell once again challenged in the Group E category and finished second in the semi-final to Robin Larsson to progress to the final, in which he finished fourth, holding on despite suffering a puncture as he crossed the finish line.

Johan Kristoffersson (SWE), Group E:

“It was my first time in the FC1-X. It was some experience. It started off pretty good, it felt okay in the first jump practice. We made some changes here and there to try and get the car to my liking but I couldn’t really get my head around the car - we tried a few things that I felt was an improvement and in the end I felt like we were chasing our tail a little bit. It was great to be part of the DRR JC team, they have experience of the car, and obviously it was very good to be team mates with some of the fastest guys in the championship and have the luxury to choose from their data to find lines and get me up to speed as quickly as possible. That was a big help. I got a penalty in the first heat on Sunday morning so had to fight my way through to the final and started on the back row. I started to understand the tyre a bit more after the LCQ, and I think I have to  be very happy to have a very good first corner. I tried to go round the outside and did my best to keep up with Andreas and Robin and be careful not to pick up any punctures. I had an enjoyable weekend, I learned a lot and it was a great atmosphere in the team – they are killing it with P1 to P5 in the final. It was a team victory. I wish them luck for the rest of the season.”

In his second Nitro RX appearance, Norwegian Ole Christian Veiby again challenged for podium positions, finished second in his semi-final and then fifth in the final to complete a dream result for the JC Raceteknik team in the Group E category. In the NRX NEXT division for Supercar Lites machines, Swede Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky and Lane Vacala flew the JC flag and Ahlin-Kottulinsky claimed the best result of the pair with sixth in the final in round three on Saturday, in a highly-competitive field. In the equally-competitive Crosscar category, Alex Gustafsson claimed a best result of sixth in round three on Saturday afternoon.
