The Bard at the Building Museum.

All the world is a stage and this summer, so is the National Building Museum. In partnership with Folger Library, a custom-built theater has been built inside the majestic Great Hall of DC, transforming the space into a temporary stage for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," one of Shakespeare's most famous plays. In addition to performances of the play, you can enjoy daytime and nighttime programming designed to make it an immersive experience for the whole family.

Mary McLeod Bethune Gets Her Flower(s).

Civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune was the first African American woman to be honored with a statue on public land in DC. Last month, she became the first African American to represent any state in the National Statuary Hall collection at the U.S. Capitol. Like something out of a Dan Brown novel, there are hidden symbols embedded in the statue. Find out what to look for when you go see it for yourself; timed-entry passes are required.

Curious Tip: Time slots are easier to get during the week and you’ll have more options if you wait until after Labor Day when the tourists have gone home and the kiddos are back in school.

HIDDEN SYMBOLS REVEALED

Immerse yourself.

District residents have a thing for museums, and the city has become a prime destination for a rapidly growing genre: the immersive exhibit. Right now, there are six showy productions to choose from. If you’re looking for a unique family activity (or something to do that doesn’t involve suffering in DC’s humidity) one of these experiences might be what you’re looking for.

Discover DC’s Hidden Gems.

Speaking Willow is a sound sculpture in the shape of a weeping willow tree that stands outside the entrance of the Planet Word Museum. As you pass under the motion-activated artwork, you’ll hear recordings of speech that murmur poems, songs and sayings in 500 different languages. According to artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, “I want the tree to be a reminder that all of these different human tongues are intimately interconnected and that we are all part of the same worldwide family.”
