| Good Friday!I hope you've all had a great week and are enjoying your Friday morning. This weekend looks to be a slower one than last, at least for me. Some weekends I find myself with so many interesting, fun events to cover that I can’t fit them in all in the coming week’s edition. Last week was one of those: we had the USSA visit for the sixth time - it’s an amazing nonprofit wish-granting charity that specializes in sending critically ill and disabled youth on an all-expense paid outdoor adventure of their dreams. |

On August 4, 35 families went deep sea fishing with local fisherman and spent a day making wonderful memories. I consider myself very lucky to be able to cover this every year and see the smiles on their faces when they come back to shore - and the fish they caught! Last Saturday I took the ferry over to Bald Head Island where the pirate invasion returned after a several-year hiatus and Michael Paul, our sports writer and photographer, went to Dutchman Creek and shot photos of the Cape Fear Yacht Club campers out on their boats. I wish I could’ve been at that event too, but there’s only one of me! The USSA event is in this week’s edition, but the pirates and the 420’s Sailing Camp kids will be in the August 17 paper and the online edition, so check them out. Have a great rest of your weekend - maybe you have family visiting, maybe you’re off visiting friends and loved ones, or maybe you’re going to just relax. Whatever your plans are, make the most of them. |

Here’s what we are working on for next week’s Pilot: |
| • School honors – South Brunswick Middle School’s new assistant principal Melissa Blake is also the county’s Assistant Principal of the Year
• Fire alarm – An independent investigation claims serious systemic issues with firefighting on Bald Head Island related to last year’s fire that burned four homes
• Football Season – Believe it or not it’s time for Friday night football, and we’ll have a preview of South Brunswick’s up-and-coming Cougar team
• Indigo report – Southport’s planning board officially presents its recommendation to aldermen on the controversial Indigo Phase II project
• Inlet woes – We’ll take a look at how Lockwood Folly Inlet is nearly impassible for boats at low tide and channel markers are off-station
• Oak Island – Council prepares to tackle some tough issues – paid parking, sand projects and a controversial rezoning request at its monthly meeting |

Living the Sweet Life: Exploring Urban Beekeeping with Gary Shoemake |
In anticipation of World Honey Day next week (Aug. 20th), we met up with Gary Shoemake who is an “urban beekeeper” here in Brunswick County. He was kind enough to share some of his (vast!) knowledge about honeybees and let us take a look at his hives. Learning about the important role of these little pollinators was a sweet experience! |

There are several ways to support the important work that our community nonprofit organizations do. We’ve made a list of ideas below to get you started. • Make financial donations. Nonprofit organizations require funding to meet their missions. Support from donors can cover operating costs and ensure missions are not stalled or canceled due to lack of funding. • Engage in peer-to-peer fundraising. Sharing information about an organization with others and asking them to support the nonprofit is known as peer-to-peer fundraising. This can happen by word-of-mouth advertising on social media, asking for fundraising for a cause in lieu of traditional birthday or special event gifts, or sharing fliers or other advertisements around town. This type of fundraising is especially valuable because it does not require nonprofit organizations to allocate their own resources in order to generate donations. |
| • Provide PTO time to willing volunteers. Business owners in a community can be sure their employees have adequate paid time off to volunteer with local nonprofits. A company may establish a set amount of hours or days per quarter or month that can be used for volunteerism in any aspect. • Sponsor an event. While private individuals can sponsor events, the collective resources of a business or other group, such as a school, may be better equipped to spearhead a charity event. • Participate in or attend an event. Even if you cannot donate or sponsor an event, you can still be involved. Showing up to support a cause can help raise awareness and inspire nonprofit workers and volunteers. |

Look to the sky tonight - The Perseid meteors are at their peak today and tomorrow, but that big beautiful full moon might hinder the view this year. Check out this article, “Meteors in moonlight: 6 tips for 2022’s Perseids” | EarthSky to learn how to optimize your viewing chances. Monday is National Relaxation Day. This seems a bit counter-intuitive for those who still clock in, but even a small amount of relaxation does wonders. Benefits can include a decrease in blood pressure, pain relief, and improvements to cardiovascular and immune systems. And, of course, improved mood is a big one! Learn more. Don’t Forget! Tuesday is National Tell a Joke Day. According to Loma Linda University, laughing makes your brain process memories more effectively. Research shows that the less stress that you have, the better your memory will function. ICYMI (in case you missed it) - A 2-year-old in Kentucky just became Mensa’s youngest member. Read more about it here. DYK - (did you know) - IBM’s first personal computer was introduced to the public on August 12, 1981. It cost the equivalent of $3,000 in today's currency.
