ARTS ADVOCACY UPDATE

Dear friends in the arts,

We recently learned that last month our Representative in DC, Congressman Dusty Johnson, voted in favor of a last-minute budget amendment that would have drastically reduced the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) annual budget — cutting the NEA budget by 25%, sending it back to 2017 levels. Thankfully it did not pass and did not reduce the budget.

As you know, the NEA is vital to our creative community in South Dakota and is a catalyst for so many essential arts programs in every corner of our state. I wrote Dusty a letter expressing our disappointment in his vote. That letter is below for you to read. We need our lone Representative in Congress to show support and be a leader for the Arts in South Dakota.

I encourage you also to share your view with Dusty, asking him to support the NEA in the future. After all, the NEA is one of the only and very limited (only .003% of the national budget!) federal government programs supporting the Arts across America.

Here is how you contact Congressman Dusty Johnson: https://dustyjohnson.house.gov/contact or call his office at (202) 225-2801.

We must let our elected leaders know South Dakotans value the arts and insist they carry forward that value as they represent us.

Sincerely,
Jim Speirs
Executive Director
