Council Endorses Daintree Ferry Replacement Project

A NEW ferry and upgrades to approach roads will address the long-standing issue of lengthy waiting times at the Daintree Ferry in the peak tourism season. These measures will also improve the level of service for regular ferry users.

ABC NEWS - More women driving tractors and trains for the sugarcane harvest

Manoeuvring a 10-tonne tractor over rough terrain and tipping sugar cane into a train carriage may require skill and concentration, but Jasmine Cartwright and Elsa Tickler have taken to it like ducks to water.

Mayor speaks at Coastal Leaders Forum 2022

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr addressed the forum (see above) this week to talk about the region's strengths and the efforts made to diversify the economy in recent times. 

ONE WEEK TO GO || Reef-to-Reef MTB

Riders can choose the either the 48km Long Course or the 35km Classic options which will coincide with the final day of Reef to Reef.

Both races distances start at the same location, include a descent of the infamous Bump Track and finish with the same dash along Four Mile Beach to the finish at Port Douglas.

Works Notice: Parker Creek Crossing, Mossman

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will be working to upgrade Parker Creek Crossing, near the southern entrance to Mossman CBD, from late-August until early 2023.

ONE MONTH TO GO || Port Douglas Gran Fondo

The 136km and 100km Gran Fondo courses, and the 48km Medio Fondo (Medium Ride) will be held on Sunday 11 September.

Daintree Ferry Consultation - AMSA Inspection 2023

Council is currently putting in place arrangements for the five-day ferry closure for AMSA’s out of water inspection.

Weed of the Month - Miconia

Miconia Calvescens is native to tropical America and was first discovered in the Douglas Shire in 1997 in the Whyanbeel Creek Valley. The species has since been detected at five separate locations inside the Shire.

Reminder of Temporary Maintenance Closure at the Daintree Ferry - November 2022

The Daintree River Ferry will not operate from 10pm Friday 18 November 
2022
until 5am Tuesday 22 November 2022 to allow for important safety maintenance  work to be completed.

Rate notices are issued half-yearly in January and July each year.

  • The production of Wizards! completed its last day of filming at Wangetti Beach yesterday.
  • Sand dredged from the  Daintree Ferry has now been moved to the Rocky Point area - See image below
  • Work crews started screening old dirt stockpiles at Drumsara facility to remove rocks and vegetation so it is ready to use as topsoil on upcoming projects. 
  • Bridge inspections were completed for all bridges in the Douglas Shire.
