Book Talk: William Fulton's Place and Prosperity How Cities Help Us to Connect and Innovate

Event Location: Brazos Bookstore 2421 Bissonnet St, Houston, TX 77005

There are few more powerful questions than, “Where are you from” or “Where do you live?” People feel intensely connected to cities as places and to other people who feel that same connection. In order to understand place - and understand human settlements generally - it is important to understand that places are not created by accident. They are created in order to further a political or economic agenda. Better cities emerge when the people who shape them think more broadly and consciously about the places they are creating.

NATIONAL COMMUNITY PLANNING MONTH (OCTOBER 2022)
JOIN ULI HOUSTON AND APA HOUSTON
ENGAGING CHILDREN IN THE ACTIONS FOR HEALTH EQUITY IN SETTEGAST

October 2022 (more details forthcoming)

Do you enjoy engaging kids in fun, immersive, and creative ways? Do you have extensive experience helping kids become active participants in the planning process? Then consider signing up to support the American Planning Association (APA Houston) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI Houston) during this year's National Community Planning Month for a youth engagement workshop in Houston's Settegast neighborhood at BC Elmore Elementary School in October.

The workshop is part of ULI Houston's Actions for Health Equity in Settegast, a community planning effort aimed at addressing the legacy of racial discrimination in urban planning and development which impacts health and well-being in Settegast today. Settegast has the lowest life expectancy in Houston – a 24 year gap from neighborhoods with the highest life expectancy – and is one of five communities in North America supported by ULI’s Building Healthy Places Initiative to address the health effects of racial disparities in planning and real estate. Participants will support children from the neighborhood in becoming active participants in shaping Settegast’s future on matters of public space, affordable housing, amenities and services, parks/greenspace, transportation, and the public realm.

Sign up via the google form if you're interested in participating and tell us how you would be able to support! If you are planning to volunteer for any activities in the school, please complete HISD VIPS training

Steps:

  1. Fill out the google form

  2. Complete and return receipt of your HISD VIPS training to Luis Guajardo at lgg2@rice.edu and Katie Wang at kjf8@rice.edu.

  3. Complete cultural sensitivity training (the ULI project team will contact you to register once steps 1-2 are completed)

Shad Comeaux, Adjunct Professor, TSU

Shad taught a class on Principles of Site Design this summer at TSU. As the final design project, the class chose the Cuney Homes site. Cuney Homes is in Houston’s historic Third Ward community and  was the first development opened by Houston’s Housing Authority in 1943. TSU planning students are working in parallel to the Cuney Homes Choice Neighborhood Initiative, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and locally led by the Houston Housing Authority. The class is utilizing data from the formal planning process and presenting their plan and site design to local leaders tasked with the reimagining of Cuney Homes.

The grant, for $450,000, will be used to develop a resident and community-driven plan for meaningful neighborhood transformation centered around the redevelopment of Cuney Homes, Houston’s longest-standing public housing community, located in Historic Third Ward. Congrats and best of luck to Shad and the Site Design class of TSU!
