Hereturikōkā | August 2022
Kia ora koutou,
This is always a busy time of year with end of financial year accounts, annual general meetings, grant applications and reporting and plenty of other things going on – all on top of our usual services and activities. I hope you are all keeping well and taking time to relax when you can. The good news is that we are on the home stretch of winter!

There is plenty going on at CSC too. Those who applied for the Community Development Small Grants Fund should have received the outcome of their application now – please let us know if you haven’t. Justin has been working hard on a comprehensive training programme, and you will see many opportunities below for you and your teams to make the most of.

We are also turning our attention to the Social Wellbeing Forum. Please do save the date for this – Friday 28 October. The purpose of the Social Wellbeing Forum forum is to bring the community sector together to discuss the current social needs and solutions, identify opportunities to collaborate, and develop a report which will inform decision making at city council, central government agencies, and other stakeholders. In preparation for the forum, our team have begun meeting with a range of organisations to learn how the environment you work in has changed over the past three years. We will be reaching out to the sector more as we prepare for the forum.

CSC’s Annual General Meeting will be on Thursday 29 September at 12pm at Hancock Community House. This will also be the election of The Collective (our governing board) for the next 12 months. If you are interested in standing, we’d love to hear from you. You can chat to myself or any of the current Collective members – and if you want to stand you can complete a nomination form, endorsed by two member groups, and return it to the office (or email) before the AGM.

Lastly, for CSC member groups, our members' meeting is coming up Thursday 11 August at Hancock Community House, I look forward to seeing you there!

Ngā mihi,
Tim

Our Government has worked hard to lift incomes and make life more affordable for Kiwi families. Now, we’re providing further cost of living support for people here in Palmerston North.

Our new Cost of Living Payment began this week, and will support more than two million New Zealanders, including many here in Palmerston North. People are likely to be eligible if they earned $70,000 or less over the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022, and are aged 18 or older, but aren’t eligible for the Winter Energy Payment. It will be paid in monthly instalments, in August, September and October.

There’s nothing they need to do to apply for the payment, and the income threshold is based on individual income, not household income. If eligible, people will receive the payments directly from IRD. However, IRD does need the correct information and its website has more details: ird.govt.nz/cost-of-living-payment.

This new Cost of Living Payment sits alongside our Winter Energy Payment, and, when taken together, these payments will support 81% of New Zealanders aged 18 and over with their bills this year.

Succession Planning
19 September, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Hancock Community House
$20 for CSC members/$30 others

Succession planning is the process of making sure your organisation is prepared to successfully continue. This workshop, facilitated by Megan Thorn from Exult, focuses on three different types of succession planning: strategic, leadership and emergency, across both governance and operational teams.

The workshop shares practical processes for covering all three, and for building succession planning into a process for the organisation, as opposed to an event.

We share ideas and stories that help organisations discover:
  • Why Succession Planning is essential for non-profit organisations, regardless of what stage of the journey they are at.
  • What things need to be considered in developing a succession plans.
  • Who needs one? And what should be in it?
  • Ideas for raising the idea of Succession Planning as a positive process for the long-term sustainability.
  • Ideas for building a culture of succession in the organisation.

Attracting Donations
23 September, 10am-12:30pm
Hancock Community House
Free

Presented by Helen King, an experienced grants writer and communicator who has worked in the local for-community sector since 2006.

Donations can be an important stream of income in helping organisations thrive and grow, but sometimes it is hard to know where to start and, once you have, how to sustain donor engagement and interest.

This discursive and interactive workshop will look at why donations are important, how to begin the process of attracting donations, and, importantly, how to tell our stories in a way that connects with people who want to give.

Social Wellbeing Forum

Save the date: the 2022 Social Wellbeing Forum will be on 28 October, 9am-12:30pm. Last held in 2019, the SWF is an opportunity to take stock of the most prevalent social needs in our community right now, and will produce a report which we hope will inform and influence policy and programming across local government, central government agencies and the social sector. Held regularly since 2007, this will be the first SWF since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Our team is currently conducting visits and interviews with various community groups, and we will be reaching out over the next few months to seek your input as we prepare for the forum.

Managers’ Forums are a space to share and grow your knowledge with other managers in the community and social sector. Facilitated by Jude Bartlett, each forum will have some time to share ‘what’s on top’ for you, a short talk on a topic, and a group discussion about that topic. Forums are on the last Wednesday of each month, 2pm-3pm at Hancock Community House. Email Tim Kendrew if you would like to be kept up to date.
