I hope you all are having a wonderful summer!
I am happy to announce that The HOPE series is a part of the exhibit, LES TRAMES DU POSSIBLE organized by AMELIE, MAISON D'ART in Paris, France. Special thanks to Johanna Colombatti for finding me and encouraging me to create new pieces.
In 2019, I was one of the grantees of the Alliance for California Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program with my apprentice, Steph Rue and I was able to pass down Korean textile traditions. Earlier this year, I applied again with another person who is eager to learn about Korean textile tradition and we were selected for 2022 Apprenticeship grantees. Mariah Bintliff is a young artist who is eager to learn about her Korean heritage and the beautiful way of bojagi. We will study together for 1 year and update you on our progress! She already posted some progress including last week's indigo dyeing experience on her Instagram account. This time, we will try to record our progress in various forms like short videos posted on YouTube or Vimeo. I am grateful that I can pass down Korean textile traditions to the younger generation and hope our effort to keep the tradition goes on.
My backyard indigo project is progressing. I used a blender and ice cubes to keep the dye bath cold and got a range of sea-foam colors. The fresh leaf indigo dyeing process was fun and very satisfying!
Next week, I am flying to Maine to attend the Slow Stitching 2022 organized by Samantha of A Gathering of Stitches. It is a retreat that I was supposed to attend in 2020 and finally, it is happening! I started packing in July and here are a few additions I made recently. Mini iron case, a hat, and a linen jacket that I hand-stitched (I copied the pattern from my favorite jacket that I bought years ago) . I think I am ready to meet and spend a week with like-minded people.
