Vale Uncle Archie Roach

The hearts of Blak Australia are heavy following the death of Uncle Archie Roach.

Uncle Archie Roach was a Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung Senior Elder, and one of the greatest songmen of our time. His music gives solace to many, and called out many of the injustices faced by mob. He was a courageous storyteller who told hard truths with love. Uncle Archie Roach was a survivor of the Stolen Generations, taken from his family and Country at a young age, and raised by a white family in Melbourne, not knowing he was one of seven siblings that had all been separated. He was a husband, a father, a friend, and an inspiration to many. He died on 30 July 2022, surrounded by family. Uncle Archie was only 66. There are no words to express the profound grief at Uncle Archie's death.

On behalf of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Equity Network and SUPRA, I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends and community of Uncle Archie Roach. May you rest in power.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Officer

Fun Fact

Playtpuses produce milk for their young, but because they have no teats, the milk excretes from the surface of their skin, like sweat. The milk has powerful antibacterial properties due to its unusual protein, which has a ringlet-like formation and so is called the Shirley Temple protein.
