Welcome to the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Newsletter. It is a priority for ACPS to keep the community informed about ACPS' current capital improvement projects. This newsletter is distributed on the first Monday of every month and includes major updates from some of our ongoing projects.

The High School Project: Minnie Howard Redevelopment
  • Site clearing work, storm and sanitary pipe installation are ongoing at the site.
  • Pile driving was completed in July and installation of tie backs are in the process.
  • Community members can send questions, comments and concerns to the project email: hsproject@acps.k12.va.us Gilbane will also host a website dashboard to provide project updates.

Douglas MacArthur Modernization Project:
 
Ongoing construction updates:
  • Electrical duct bank install wrapping up on SW corner of site.

  • Erection of the remaining steel superstructure is ongoing, expected to be complete by the end of next week.

  • Gym roof joists have been erected, roof decking soon to follow.

  • Exterior framing and sheathing is ongoing on Level 1 and Level 2.

  • Footer for retaining wall #1 near the garage entrance has been poured.

  • Waterline along the east side of the building is being installed.

  • Slab on Metal Decking (SOMD) prep ongoing for pour on Level 2 Area D and Level 3 Area B

  • Slab on Grade (SOG) MEP rough-ins complete in Area D.

  • Mockup of the façade construction at the southeast corner of the site

Educational Facilities: 

Alexandria City High School: King Street Campus

  • Parking garage repairs on-going, currently working on phase 9 of 10.

  • Additional fencing work complete with some additional scope being added.

  • Perimeter fence ITB contractor site visit held.

Charles Barrett Elementary School

  • HVAC renovation project ongoing.

  • Phase II of asbestos flooring remediation in kindergarten is complete.

  • Kindergarten LVT installation commenced.

Cora Kelly for Math, Science and Technology

  • Office carpeting delayed; installation projected for fall.

  • Library lighting project scoped, pricing underway.

Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School

  • Interior renovation being scoped.

  • Parking garage repairs on-going, currently working on phase 9 of 10.

Francis C. Hammond Middle School

  • Asbestos flooring remediation complete.

  • Building envelope / water intrusion - skybridge water test complete.

  • HVAC renovation work is ongoing.

  • Courtyard Drainage and stormwater management redesign is ongoing.

  • Gymnasium Lobby Renovation ongoing.

George Washington Middle School

  • HVAC renovation work is ongoing in phases, fan coil unit and RTU installation ongoing.

  • Gymnasium painting resumed.

  • Field Renovation - design work is ongoing; community meeting being planned.

  • Asbestos flooring remediation complete.

  • Gymnasium Lobby Restrooms renovation ongoing.

  • Gymnasium Lobby Renovation ongoing.

  • Gymnasium tile repair work scheduled.

John Adams Elementary School

  • Stormwater management improvements being scoped and scheduled.

  • Library renovation ongoing.

  • Hardscape improvements being scheduled.

James Polk Elementary School

  • Kindergarten cabinets, countertops, sinks ongoing.

  • Asbestos flooring remediation complete.

  • LVT and carpet installation ongoing.

  • Stormwater management and erosion engineering study ongoing.

  • Restroom countertops ongoing.

Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy

  • Outdoor learning, playground, and fields stormwater retention calculations ongoing.

  • Parking lot repairs being scheduled for summer work.

  • New display cases complete.

  • Library painting being scoped.

  • Kitchen renovation design development phase ongoing.

Mount Vernon Community School

  • Phase III emergency asbestos remediation for ceiling and floor tile complete.

  • Kitchen/cafeteria renovation punch list ongoing; dock ramp scheduled.

  • Library renovation construction is ongoing.

  • Courtyard stormwater management improvement design permitted.

  • New chiller ordered and awaiting fall delivery.

  • Front parapet wall and concrete removal planned.

Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School

  • Security safety vestibule design ongoing.

  • Media Center renovation design commenced.

  • Interior painting ongoing.

  • Asbestos remediation / carpet removal complete, LVT installation commenced.

  • Window replacement project on hold.

Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School

  • Carpet replacement in break-out areas now scheduled for fall.

  • Playground surfacing scheduled for summer.

  • Interior painting of the main hallway complete.

  • Column tuck-pointing and kindergarten window repairs complete.

William Ramsay Elementary School

  • LVT flooring tile repairs schedule was delayed due to additional summer school usage.

  • Building envelope engineering study ongoing.

  • Kitchen renovation design ongoing, construction documents in process. 

  • Stormwater management and erosion engineering study ongoing.
